Any medics help? Baby vomiting green bile

betterchangemynamequick · 13/11/2021 04:17

12 month old has had cough/cold for 2 days, no fever. Started vomiting 36 hours ago, no interest in food whatsoever last 16 hours but will breastfeed, altho vomits again within 2-3mins of feeding. Also two bouts diarrhoea in last 12 hours. Last couple hours empty dry retching every 30mins or so, and now just brought up pool bright green bile. Is the bile something to panic about or common in GI upsets? Not experienced it with other DC

Not something I've experienced but id be straight on the phone to NHS24 or other medical provider. NHS guidelines suggest medical attention for green bile sick in infants

PieonaBarm · 13/11/2021 04:29

Go to A&E. Vomiting green bile is serious, I don't want to scaremonger, but for me it was a sign of complete kidney failure (I did recover after extremely invasive treatment).

A&E - NOW

A&E

How is LO op? Sending well wishes

Rrrob · 13/11/2021 05:51

My 18m twins have both done this during a recent sickness bug. T2 is only eating normally again now 2 weeks later. Awful to watch but I assumed it was because their tummies were empty. I don’t want to give medical advice incase i’m under playing it but hope your LO is better soon.

Buddyhobbs · 13/11/2021 05:54

Not a medic but my niece was similar at that age and had to be admitted for IV fluids. She was in paeds for nearly a week.

CommonRoom · 13/11/2021 05:56

OP please go to A and E now. Good luck!

rrhuth · 13/11/2021 05:57

Another here with experience of green bile vomit - must be checked urgently.

tiredanddangerous · 13/11/2021 06:09

You need to get her looked at asap Flowers

bluebellYellow · 13/11/2021 06:15

Hope you've managed to get your dc seen op.

oatmilk4breakfast · 13/11/2021 06:19

Please go to A&E if your baby can’t keep anything down. Vomiting bile suggests nothing at all in stomach. They will be dehydrated. I’d say get medical help now.

betterchangemynamequick · 13/11/2021 07:52

Thanks all, I called OOH GP and still waiting for a callback from doc but the person I spoke was reassuring. Baby is keen to feed so advice was to nurse little and often until the doc calls and go to A&E if she continues to bring up bile or seems to deteriorate. As luck would have it, she hasn't vomited since then and has nursed as much as I've allowed. Bit of relief, I was worried seeing the green bile. OOH person said it's not uncommon when there's lots of retching on an empty stomach.
Thanks to everyone who replied. It's lonely when you're panicking at 4am. Love MN for that support Thanks
Seems to be nonstop illness here lately 😕

If it’s fairy liquid green rather than yellow/green you need to go to ED now. Proper bilious vomiting can be a sign of really serious issues such as volvulus or obstruction- those things are time critical, so you need to not accept reassurances of some random person on the phone- you need a paediatrician feeling your child’s tummy and properly checking them out.

GoodnightGrandma · 13/11/2021 08:06

Is baby still having wet nappies ?

whatswithtodaytoday · 13/11/2021 08:09

Is she keeping breast milk down now? Bile means there's nothing in her stomach to bring up, I'm surprised they didn't ask her to go in to be rehydrated.

HalloweenScrooge · 13/11/2021 08:11

When this happened to us it was a child well on their way to sepsis. Have you looked at the paediatric traffic light? Babies so young can’t be easily assessed over the phone.

@heythereamigo bit harsh** -an RVN working at OOH is hardly a random on the phone.
Whereas a bunch of mumsnetters.... Wink

So yes she's now keeping breastmilk down. She hasn't vomited since that bile at 3am which makes me optimistic. She has had one decent wet nappy this am (and one awful diarrhoea one!) more full than I expected tbh, given how much she'd vommed. The wet nappy makes me happy, as yesterday she passed very little urine all day/night. Her demeanour isn't too bad either. She'd quite happily camp out on the boob and snooze feed nonstop I think, problem is she seems to overload and then spew it all up again.
OOH GP are happy with this so far. Apparently although bile vomit is not to be dismissed, it can be produced through prolonged or repeated retching on empty stomach and isn't always as urgent as it seems.

I rely first and foremost on myself, if I feel she isn't improving she'll be in A&E pronto, regardless of what a doctor or anyone else says. If the vomiting persists I'll have her seen today but for now I'm content that she's content. I appreciate very much the responses, thank you all. It's lonely at 3am when you're panicking.

Whereas a bunch of mumsnetters.... Might be better not to ask on here and phone 111 instead in future

betterchangemynamequick · 13/11/2021 14:59

@rrhuth that's unnecessary. I was worried and upset, asked for opinions, was grateful and thanked posters for them.
The pp criticised taking the advice given by 111 as being a "random on the phone". I merely pointed out that anonymous mumsnetters are actually randoms whereas the person I spoke to was a qualified RVN who presumably has more experience than most of us. If you've nothing helpful to say then just scroll past, sarcasm and catty comments are uncalled for

Glad she’s stopped being sick OP. When I drank when I was younger I was a frequent vomited (why I don’t bother now) and for me the bile was always the last puke, when I knew it was over. Like nurse has said to you, probably the result of retching with nothing left in there after being unable to keep water down. Think you were right to check it out but I wouldn’t have thought it meant disaster. Hope she is back to herself soon and that no one else gets it.

It wasn't sarcasm - I meant it! That you might be better to ask 111straight away in future.

I understand you are stressed.
