Hysteroscopy

First time poster hope this is in right section. Just looking to hear other people's experiences and opinions to see if I'm over thinking this.

Yesterday I had an outpatients Gynae. appt arranged by GP because of results of a transvaginal scan. Arrived at reception and booked in all fine, name called and shown into room by friendly male nurse. In the room were consultant and two women who he introduced very quickly as a student doctor and student nurse. He asked a few questions then stood up and said he would need to take a sample and it could be slightly uncomfortable, was I ok with that. (cant remember exact wording).

I said yes that's fine, I was actually pleased he said it as I was thinking that at some point I would need a procedure and at least this way I would avoid having to wait and be booked in for GA and hysterscopy. ( which is how I had the previous one).
Original male nurse came in to assist, presumably because students aren't allowed? So now 5 of us in this tiny room!

Anyway he tried to get samples of womb lining but said my cervix was too closed, I was very tense at this point only as I did not know what to expect. I kept seeing instruments like a long pipette, scissors etc in his hand. The pain was actually not an issue, it was the not knowing. Also at one point the nurse had to leave room and go and get something so I was lying there with speculum in just waiting. Also a bucket at my feet filled with used swabs and plastic tubes etc, sorry im just remembering as I type.

After about 30 mins he said I cant do it so ill have to book you in for GA unless you want to try local now, I said yes and he managed to do it.

I always thought you had to give permission for students? But to be honest its over 15 years since I have had a student in room so is it an opt out thing now?

Also im so annoyed at myself that I didnt ask exactly what he had to do, he just mumbled about taking samples.

Thank you if you have made it this far! I just felt I had get it straight in my mind somehow.

Sounds like they did manage to take a sample of the lining of your womb. I had a similar experience but ended up going back for a hysteroscopy using water to navigate.
The first appointment there was scar tissue the lady doctor said., so she couldn’t take a sample. I felt a little shaken because I thought I was getting some results from the scan which were only precautionary anyway but the lady registrar said I was on the two week cancer pathway and that they had found three things which didn’t sound at all hopeful. I was a bit shell shocked tbh and like you wished I had asked more questions.
However when I went back for the second time I saw a make doctor who took ages looking at the scans with me and telling me exactly why they lo9ed quite boring and he wasn’t too worried. He did the procedure fine, it was a bit uncomfortable and I took a few days to recover. I still don’t have the full results but don’t feel hugely concerned.

@Lovereallywins yes they did get the samples which im relieved about. I guess I was just a bit surprised about the two students and not being asked. Thats good the second doctor talked through your scans in detail with you. Are you waiting for the biospy results if you dont mind me asking?

So are you not happy with the procedure? Or is it not consenting to the students presence. Are you sure he didn't mention it as part of the conversation and you missed it. Seems unlikely that they wouldn't introduce the students and check it's ok.

disneylover367 · 12/11/2021 23:28

@Toddlerteaplease procedure was fine in the end, Im relieved he got the samples and I dont have to have GA.

100% he didnt say anything about students other then to introduce them as I walked in and sat down. when everyone left the room for me to undress and get on the table I assumed just the consultant and qualified nurse would come back in the room. Thats why I thought maybe things had changed and its assumed you are ok with it unless you specifically say otherwise?

I think it is normal for students to be present in a teaching hospital? It sounds like there was a lack of communication going on here. Not good I know and I think you should have been asked rather than introduced. But if it were me I'd shrug it off as job done and move on.

disneylover367 · 13/11/2021 00:03

@notangelinajolie yes a teaching hospital of course, this was just a regular hospital though.

I agree overall most likely lack of communication, they were actually lovely all the staff.

As far as I'm aware you should have been specifically asked if you were ok with the students being there for the actual procedure I think it's very poor form to not communicate this clearly and with space for a patient to refuse.

Personally I think patients shouldn't be asked with students present but unfortunately I know that does happen which I think makes it harder for patients to refuse

disneylover367 · 13/11/2021 00:26

@Graphista yes I remember this being the case but assumed things had changed. Oh well at least they were just observing!

Yes OP still waiting the results of the biopsy. Will have to chase as it has been more than 2 weeks now. Sounds like there was a lack of communication about the students being there. I found like you, everyone was lovely and there was a lot of dignity for me. I imagine anyone having this procedure who has not had children would find it harder. Hope we are both in the clear with our results.

Shouldhavedoneitsooner · 13/11/2021 12:00

If you haven’t heard anything after two weeks I would take that as a good sign. I had my bad news delivered after one week. The cancer pathway will make things happen quickly if they need to.
I agree that the not knowing what to expect is frustrating. I had a scan sprung on me and students but was asked about them first. To be honest, I am just glad to have the tests and follow up offered quickly especially in this time of Covid. Hospitals are so stretched. Good luck with your next steps.

disneylover367 · 13/11/2021 12:21

@Lovereallywins yes fingers crossed and good idea to chase results, two weeks was timescale I was given also.

@Shouldhavedoneitsooner sorry to hear your results were not so good. I agree re. timescales as I feel very grateful I have been seen promptly from the first scan referral especially in covid times.
