What age for toddler bed

Wasn’t sure where else to put this but got a really small place to put a bed so was Looking at toddler beds what’s the maximum age for a toddler bed? Would be 4 be too big?

You could look at a small single which might be slightly larger than a toddler bed

careerchangeperhaps · 12/11/2021 21:05

It depends how big your child is really. My eldest fitted in hers until she was almost 7 but she's quite small for her age and was probably more like the size of a 5-6 year old at the time.

Starcaller · 12/11/2021 21:10

Personally I think it's too small. DD is nearly 3 and looked really cramped when we put hers together, although that's probably because she's used to cosleeping in a super king GrinIf you can fit in a single somehow I think that would be better. I don't think you'd get long enough out of a toddler bed to be worth the expense.

Yeh I thought so, she’s on the small side and not tall but they do look tiny, don’t really want a small single as they are mostly divans I think? Don’t want a divan bed

DD was in her cot bed (with sides off) until 4.5 and we only switched then because it broke! She's average size. The bed is 140x70

careerchangeperhaps · 13/11/2021 06:30

If you don't want a divan, could a bed be cut to size? It's fairly easy to do on many wooden beds if you / DP / DH are a bit 'handy'. You only have to cut the long bits that run between the headboard and the footboard, take out a few slats and re-drill the holes for the bolts and screws.
If I were you, I'd buy a secondhand bed frame on marketplace / gumtree and do the above.
For the mattress, either buy one for a 'shortie' bed and resize the bed to fit the mattress (cheapest option!), or size the bed to suit and order a custom size mattress.

Jabvribt · 13/11/2021 06:32

We moved DD to a big bed at 4 and a half as she was definitely getting too big for it

Classicblunder · 13/11/2021 06:36

My 5 year old is still in his toddler bed (cot bed size) - he is average size and I don't think he will grow out of it any time soon. I think some kids prefer to feel cosy and enclosed - his bed has a ridge around it.

RestingPandaFace · 13/11/2021 06:38

IKEA do one that goes up in sizes so you get a bit more room while they are small and can extend it to single bed length as they grow.

SpamIAm · 13/11/2021 06:39

My 4.5 year old is still in her toddler bed. It's an IKEA one so it's 160cm in length, can't remember the width... she is on the smaller side for her age. Will probably upgrade her in 6 months or so when DS is old enough to use a bed, but otherwise she's still got plenty of room. She doesn't particularly move around much anyway.

You don't actually need a bed unless your house is damp - you can just put the mattress on the floor (Montessori style).
Blackmagicqueen · 13/11/2021 06:56

Both my dc were becoming frustrated in theirs at lack of space around 2; they're really tall though and love to sprawl out! Ikea do extendable beds, maybe worth a look. Would a single dec not fit in the room? It is surprising as i haf a tiny room growing up made smaller by fact my parents didn't realise the bed would have fitted on another wall maling the room a lot more functional!

We just moved my son out of his Cotbed.

He's average-tall for his age and nearly 5.

He was a little big in it for the last few months TBF. But he slept well and never complained

Bananarice · 13/11/2021 06:59

My five year old can easily fit in his younger brother toddler bed. He slept on it when my nephew came for a sleep over. Toddler co slept with me for one night. My five year old was very happy in the Toddler bed.

Hill1991 · 13/11/2021 07:05

Have you looked into a low down single bed so you don't then have to replace in a few years

MotherOfCrocodiles · 13/11/2021 07:16

The ikea junior bed could be a good compromise- 160 x 70. I should think this would be ok til at least 7

Camomila · 13/11/2021 07:20

You can get children's "shorty" wooden beds in Argos, 180cm rather than 190cm long.
