Are you friends on social media with your work colleagues if you're a manager?

I work for a company who have several different working units and I go in and manage different units. The area manager is my line manager.

I've made the mistake before of becoming fb friends with colleagues whom I manage and been burnt by them and got too friendly, making the line of manager/staff blurred. I've also done the same with WhatsApp.

After lots of back stabbing etc from one unit (where I don't go anymore), I decided I won't be adding colleagues anymore.

I've been working with this lovely lady the past few weeks and we get on well. I'm her manager whilst I run this unit and the other day she friend requested me on fb. I saw it but ignored it, which was hard but after being burnt before I stuck to my guns.

Today she said "you ignored my fb request, I even sent you a message.." sounding a bit sad, which made me feel very uncomfortable. I've decided to suck it up and try to get a thicker skin.

Are you friends on social media with your colleagues?

All my large team are Facebook friends From the clerks to the managers.

No - boundaries. We are not friends.

No. I used to completely hide my profile from everyone but I don’t think you can do that anymore. Not as easily anyway. It’s a recipe for disaster.

I am friends with some of my managers on social media and I am friends with people I have/do manage. We're all perfectly capable of being professional and if anyone has defriended me I've not taken it personally.

I'm FB friends with my manager but other than wishing each other ' happy birthday' neither of us comment on each other's posts, although we do like them. I use FB but not loads and it's all very PG so nothing that I would feel I'd want (need) to hide from her. She posts even less than me. My previous manager had a no FB friends rule which she told me about (I wouldn't have FB friends requested her anyway!) and I respected it. So I don't think you're being unreasonable at all.

No. I always refuse both past and present.
If any of them pop up on the ' people you may know ' feed, I immediately block them.
My settings are on private and I don't have a profile pic of me on there.
I don't have any other social media, including WhatsApp.
