Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe- how to support her and her husband

TableTopTennis · 12/11/2021 11:44

I am just appalled by her continued imprisonment. Her husband always speaks with such dignity and calm but he must be absolutely desperate. He's on hunger strike now.

I want to support his campaign, and pressure our Government to do more, but how? Is there anything I can do other than writing to my MP?

She is supposed to be under diplomatic protection, yet the government has done nothing to give that meaning

I don’t think she is under diplomatic protection? My understanding is if you are a dual citizen and travel to a country you are a citizen of, in this case Iran, their laws apply to you as if you were a citizen of that country.

As an Iranian, unfortunately Nazaneen does not have British diplomatic protection.

Nomoreusernames1244 · 12/11/2021 20:16

Here;

A British citizen who holds dual citizenship (also known as dual nationality) cannot get diplomatic help from the British Government while they are in the other country where they hold citizenship. A person who has dual nationality may be subject to the laws of the other country. 3 Dec 2018

And then there’s the fact that we don’t actually know that she isn’t guilty of a crime

You have posted several times on this thread, @HeartsAndClubs, and you seem to be insinuating something or other. Can you come out and actually say what you mean, given that you are clearly invested in the story of Nazanin?

Pyewackect · 12/11/2021 20:39

I will write to my M.P- for all the good that will do.

This is all about the Iranian government play political games and there is nothing your MP, Liz Truss or Boris can do because they are enjoying the tensions this is creating and have no intention of releasing her.

MassDebate · 12/11/2021 20:46

@Nomoreusernames1244 she’s had diplomatic protection for two years
Evidence here

Naughtynovembertree · 12/11/2021 20:58

The problem is I don't believe for a second that the UK has really tried under all the ways to try and get her released.
Pressuring politicians certainly keeps her plight in their minds and that of the public but we need to know why diplomatic efforts are failing and how they can be pressured (Iran) when we know they care nothing about for women or their rights or children's rights.

So how to apply leverage to such a country is the question.

Naughtynovembertree · 12/11/2021 21:01

Mass debate, I really Jeremy hunt.

He's a do er and I was surprised when I saw he had not been able to secure her release because from seeing him in action over covid he seems like a good egg and a good mp.

HeartsAndClubs · 12/11/2021 21:25

and you seem to be insinuating something or other. Can you come out and actually say what you mean, given that you are clearly invested in the story of Nazanin? I’m not insinuating anything. But do I think the government should just blindly pay Iran £400m for the release of one citizen? A release which hasn’t been agreed but people seem to think that the money should just be handed over…? No, I don’t. The money is a separate issue and needs to be negotiated apart from this particular situation.

I think that Richard Radcliffe has lost his focus here. He’s putting his own health at risk for a cause which has little chance of a successful outcome just because one person goes on hunger strike, and in the middle of this there is a 7 year old child who has seemingly been forgotten apart from the fact that she is being used as an emotional card when talking about the need for her mother’s release. Saying that he won’t actually allow himself to become ill because of this strike has essentially removed any power it might have contained. But on the other hand if he’s prepared to die for his cause then this is without consideration for his child. And no, “she’s obviously being well cared for by family” just doesn’t cut it.

In terms of whether she has committed a crime, well, in truth none of us actually knows the answer to that. Maybe she hasn’t, but maybe she has. Iran have some pretty stringent laws re their citizens and what they’re allowed to be involved in, so what might not be considered a crime here would there and so on. But none of us have the legal knowledge to know one way or another, and the fact that her release hasn’t been secured suggests there could be more to this. After all, why her? It could be any number of dual citizens travelling to Iran, so why this particular one?

BeeandG · 12/11/2021 21:47

I follow Nazanin's plight as it resonates with me, my daughter is a similar age to hers, I'm a similar age to Nazanin. I wish there was more we could do to help with this situation. I will email my MP and ask her to lend her support to Nazanin. If only we could crowd fund her out of there to be reunited with Richard and their daughter.

MassDebate · 12/11/2021 21:51

@HeartsAndClubs the government doesn’t dispute the money is owed, so it should just pay it and take that off the table as a bargaining chip. This isn’t handing over a ransom, it’s a valid debt due from the UK to Iran.

As to what makes Nazanin special? Not, as you’re insinuating, the fact she’s committed any crime: I’ll take the views of the likes of Amnesty, and the UN, who have the requisite legal expertise to proclaim her innocent of any charges brought against her.

A simple google search will show you that she is one of many dual national citizens arbitrarily detained in Iran too (here’s an article listing a few). What sets Nazanin apart is that she was a woman travelling alone with a baby, which allowed Iran to escalate their position.

Copied from the Free Nazanin facebook page:

“Thank you to all who have given messages of support to Richard over the past three weeks. After finishing the strike, he had excellent assessment and treatment on the Ambulatory Unit in University College Hospital London, before being deemed medically fit to return home to Gabriella. He slept well last night!

So many of you have been in touch to ask how you can help further. This Tuesday, Tulip Siddiq MP has managed to schedule a parliamentary debate to discuss Nazanin’s fate. Please would you urge your MP to attend. You can do this by emailing them or tweeting them directly. The more MPs that come and speak out on behalf of Nazanin, the greater her chance of coming home for Christmas. Thank you all for your continued support. #FreeNazanin

The hunger strike has worked. It works like any form of direct action to make the issue more visible and to bring more public awareness and political engagement. These things have all happened.

He is dignified and desperate. He is making decisions most of us will never have to really think about. He has nothing but just full respect and I hope he is successful. The contempt shown by Boris in further damaging this situation was staggering.

Noeuf · 14/11/2021 19:40

Take a look at this for those sceptical of her ‘guilt’
redress.org/news/no-freedom-for-nazanin-zaghari-ratcliffe-as-second-court-case-looms/

They looked into the allegations and found no evidence to support them.

Slobberstops · 14/11/2021 22:02

Yes I really don’t know why anyone would suspect her of ‘guilt’ in view of the circumstances. It’s appalling victim blaming.
