Help me reduce my plastic. Shampoo and conditioner bars help

PlasticFreeIn2022 · 12/11/2021 10:10

So I'm committing myself to massively reduce my 1 time use plastics.

I've brought some cloth nappies.

I've got a local shop that sell pasta, spices etc that you take your own container for.

I currently use Aussie shampoos and conditioners. This is a swap that I'm nervous about. Any help on lovely bars would be great.
Also anti dandruff for men?
We use dove soap. But my other half has requested something stronger before he'll commit to giving up his linx. Confused

Also plastic free toothpaste? And washing machine tablets.

(Before tolls come along. Yes I should've done this sooner).

@Babyroobs

How do people reduce plastic waste from things like Chicken and fish. Do local butchers wrap chicken in paper or let you take your own container ?
Pre-Covid that's exactly what I did! I think they'd be a bit wary about me handing over a container these daysSad.

Does your refill shop do toiletries and cleaning products? I invested in 5 litre bottles of things like washing up liquid, hand wash, laundry liquid etc and get them refilled. I also get shampoo and conditioner refills. My favourite product is Beauty Kubes, which are like stock cubes but are shampoo. They get a really nice lather and hair is shiny.

TheOccupier · 13/11/2021 20:51

Aren't those bag refills of things like shampoo and handwash actually worse than plastic bottles, as the bags can't be recycled whereas plastic bottles can? I know plastic can't be recycled indefinitely but the bags aren't recyclable at all.

claireb7rg · 13/11/2021 20:59

I use soul and soap shampoo bars, I've found I don't need conditioner and I have thick wavy hair. I didn't get on with gruum or my little eco shop ones.

I use wild deodorant and it's fab

I use splosh dishwasher tablets, hand wash, fabric conditioner and my partner uses the shower gel

I use our local refill shop for toilet cleaner, washing up liquid, laundry detergent and powder

Yorkshirepuddingforever · 13/11/2021 21:25

Following for ideas as have deplasticed a lot of areas but struggle with shampoo and conditioner as have highlights and quits dry hair.

Bad news for the washing powder fans...I found out the boxes can't actually be recycled usually as they have are coated in a layer of plastic to keep the powder dry Sad

Home bargains do shampoo bars at £1. They work well for me.

We too are trying to move away from 1 time plastics & be more eco friendly, making 1 change a month (know this doesn't sound alot, but we are just replacing things as they run out with more eco friendly.) So far we now have bamboo toothbrushes, use coconut oil for makeup removal and hair tamer. Started buying shampoo, conditioner bars from a craft Market in the summer (tbh wasn't expecting much, but think I struck lucky as they are brilliant for my frizzy hair & it's in better condition now than it has been for years). We now buy soap bars too (we have one each), no idea what any of them smell like 🤔 as lost my smell due to covid a few months ago, so daughter chose mine, so I'm hoping I like it when my smell eventually returns as haven't had to use body moisturiser since using it. I recently bought reusable makeup pads, waiting for them to arrive...
Next year I plan to work on the kitchen and stop using food bags and get bees wax wraps, reduce cleaning product plastic useage and look into other things too.

There are lots of threads on cloth nappies... The nappy lady site has lots of good advice too.

It is a bit more work but entirely do-able once you have a system going. Probably two washes a week extra. How many you need depends a bit on how old your child is, at around five nappy changes a day you could have maybe 15 or so nappies and always have enough, depends how often you want to wash.

If you only have a few, it's fine but you'll likely use one or two then leave them mouldering, think they're not worth a whole wash, etc. You can often get bundles of them on gumtree, eBay etc for not much and can always sell on if you don't like them. Or start with just wipes to get your head around it!

I love the shampoo bars and soaps from little giraffe co. They do lip butters and hand creams too.

Howshouldibehave · 14/11/2021 08:53

I use one local to here so can’t recommend unfortunately

Do they only sell to ‘local’ people?!

Sorry, that made me chuckle!

Seedlipvshendricks · 14/11/2021 08:58

I like eco living shampoo bars and Kin kind, I live in a very hard water area. I’ve not found a conditioner bar that works on my very coarse hair yet.
Nappies I wash 3 times a week, I have 30 BTP and 5 night nappies and never run out. When I had 25 I started to run out once autumn hit and I couldn’t dry in a day outside. I refuse to tumble them! Most of mine are bought second hand from Facebook. Wipes I have Grovia ones which are really big.
Next on my list is deodorant to try.

lochmaree · 14/11/2021 09:01

have you checked to see if there are refillables in your area?

Milk & More deliver shampoo, conditioner, hand wash, laundry stuff, washing up liquid in glass bottles and then collect them with your next order.

Miniml are another good one, we have one near us but you can buy online too.

And Fill Refill as good too, also online.

These are all liquid things but you don't necessarily need to switch to bars to avoid single use plastic. my DH won't use bars so this is what I get for him! I use a mixture.

Can you link to where you heard they are plasticised? Because I've been using boxed powder for decades and have never had a box with a layer of plastic in it (Fairy and Bold brands).

Gruum shampoo and conditioner bars work well for me. I made the switch about a year ago. Takes a bit of trial and error to get the right amount / softening the conditioner enough so it can spread through your hair, but it is possible. And I live in v hard water London with curly-ish hair.

Wild deodorant, metal case, refills come in compostable packaging. Now selling in sainsburys and starting trials in boots. But also available online

I also live in a very hard water area and Ive stopped using conditioner when using soul and soap shampoo bars. My hairdresser comments how good condition my very thick very frizzy hair is since I switched.

Another advocate of Splosh. I used their shampoo and conditioner. They are great and you can return the refill pouches to be reused.

Ilikecheeseontoast · 14/11/2021 22:15

We use a local eco fill delivery service. They drop off glass bottles with shampoo, conditioner, toiletries, cleaning products etc and then pick up empties. Like a milkman! The stuff is absolutely lovely! There may be one close to you if you google eco fill??

We use shampoo and conditioner bars from a small business called Soaps for Little Suds. I use the conditioner bar as a leave in for my son's hair and it's absolutely amazing.

I also use her shave bars, bath bombs, soaps, bubble bath etc. I can't rave about them enough!

I also love that it's a small business, too.
