Endless sodding migraines

I’m about at the end of my tether with bastard migraines that don’t end. The only thing that gets rid of them is codeine, and I don’t want to be taking that as often as I do.

So far my doctor has tried supplements (magnesium and vit d), triptans (didnt work) and I’m currently trying amitriptyline (so far not working). I’ve had a scan at the hospital so I know it’s not a tumour.

I’m going to call my GP again next week to see what else I can try, but I thought it might be useful to know what other options are out there. Has anyone found anything else that worked for them? I’m so tired of living like this.

@inthekitchensink

GP referral to neurologist, Botox injections every 3 months if you’re having over 15 migraine days a month. Life changing
Was just about to post exactly this. Not for the faint hearted but hell yes truly life changing and energy levels are so so much better as a result

I’m 43… I guess it could be the peri menopause starting. I don’t have any other symptoms (and to scared to google - I feel about 15 most days, not middle aged!)

Are you in tune with how much sleep you need?

Also napraxin has helped with my migraines in the passed.

Such a helpful thread!

I take naproxen (anti inflammatory) with amiltryptiline which seems to help.

Ritascornershop · 15/11/2021 00:22

Botox for migraines through my neurologist has been wonderful. Some people find that cancels them completely: for me it’s turned the pain way down and I just have disassociation and a bit of pressure by my eye. 38 injections every 3 months.

TheLastLonelyBakedBean · 15/11/2021 00:27

Do you grind your teeth at night?

Gosports · 15/11/2021 08:31

I don’t think I grind my teeth- I have an old retainer from when I had braces that I wore for a bit just in case it was that but that didn’t help either.

Back to the GP today - amitriptyline definitely isn’t helping. I’ve ordered some feverfew but it hasn’t arrived yet. Hopefully the GP will have some more suggestions as to what I can do next! I’ll ask about other triptans but I really want something preventative because it’s just happening far too often.

Will check out naproxen though - maybe that will be good.

Have you tried sumatriptan injections? I've tried all the pills with no joy but the jabs are great and work in under five minutes.

PoohTiggerEeyoretoo · 15/11/2021 08:44

Pizotifen is a good preventative, so is Topiramate (can have side effects).

TheLastLonelyBakedBean · 15/11/2021 13:35

Have you tried a low-Tyramine diet, an elimination diet or any other dietary changes?

larrythelizard · 15/11/2021 13:44

Haven't RTFT but have you considered all good allergens? Tomatoes give my aunt migraines which is pretty random! Maybe try the FODMAP diet?

Gosports · 01/12/2021 17:02

Just wanted to update and say a huge thank you to the people who suggested feverfew -
I’ve been taking them for 2 weeks now and not a single migraine in that time. It’s an actual miracle!!

Ah really? I just sought out this thread after yet another migraine today.

Elphame · 02/12/2021 19:12

Mine were awful - I had 36-48 hours respite between them. GP tried all sorts but nothing worked.

I went to a chiropractor with a problem with my lower back and he noted my neck was very rigid. Couple of loud cracks later and the migraines dropped to one a month literally over night. The remaining one was hormonal.

It may be worth getting an osteopath or chiropractor to check your neck for a mechanical problem.

Mnusernc · 02/12/2021 19:15

Folate deficiency caused mine, disappeared completely after.

Are you also tired? Heavy periods? How long ago did you have children, breastfeeding etc?

AdoraBell · 02/12/2021 19:24

Mine are caused by stress. I had them thought childhood, teens and early twenties. Now that I know that, and what types of stress triggers I hardly get migraines now.

I hope you get some relief soon OP

AdoraBell · 02/12/2021 19:28

Also, a pharmacist told me that stress causes most migraines due to pressure, muscles seize up and the blood cannot flow freely so the blood coming back from the brain literally weighs down the scalp and increases pressure on the brain,
