People with dogs and carpets/rugs, how do you do it?

I really want to get a rug for my living room to make it cosier, but with 2 dogs and a muddy garden I just can't imagine how I would ever manage it!

I've been looking at 'ruggable' but haven't bought one yet, quite pricey, but you can wash them

Vax. Worth its weight in gold. But I keep a couple of old towels by each door and rub down ddog whenever he comes in

I'd love a ruggable...

I don't have carpet anywhere. I've held off getting nice area rugs until dogs have ( ahem) left the building.

All the ones I do have are small and washable

Old bath towels-one laid out as an extension of the doormat to dab the paws, and another to rub the body.

Patterned rug. Doesn't show the hair as much!! And carpet fresh mousse!
And those calming ddog beds. Ddogs are hooked on them!

Rubber broom
Hoover often

Really depends on your house layout. We are rural and muddy.
I have a dog and sometimes one extra - hard floors downstairs bar the sitting room but they don't get free range of that room unless we are in there.

Feet etc wiped at door after every wet/muddy walk. Not allowed in sitting room unless clean and dry. Washable mats in hallway. Shark Vacuum helps control the hair.

To add to PP, a warm jug of water to swish their feet in, and then dry with a towel.

I have a ruggable! It's a hand me down from a friend who emigrated and I love it. I want one in every room. It washes out really well - GirlDog has now weed on it TWICE because she doesn't like going out in the rain. Both times we've stuck it in the washing machine and then hung it in the garden for 24 hours or so, then it's try.

The worst part is attaching the rug pad when it's dry. It's a faff.

IKEA sell lots of washable rugs in various sizes. I use those. The one non washable rug I have is 100% wool and it seems to resist all dirt. I have had it for 15 years and it is still cream. It must be oily wool!

I try and get them as clean as I can before they come in. If they are really bad then they get confined to the kitchen for a bit on the mopable floor. But if I do end up with mud on the carpet then I leave it till it dries then vacuum it and 95% of the time it comes up fine.

KeeOe · 11/11/2021 21:26

Derailing slightly, but try having 3 dogs with a carpet in the living room and my 2 old men are getting a bit, ahem, incontinent. A lot of my money is spent on dog urine removing solution atm 😂

Send me your muddy paws - I'll deal with them all day every day. Try dealing with lakes of piss on your floor if you arent up every 3 hours during the night. They're bloody dreadful, but I adore them, leaky bladders (occasionally bums, but I'll not mention that...)

Lovely OP, this really isn't a 'I have it worse' post, just interjecting a little humorous dog-owning aside 😊

I have a rug doctor, and I also have an old bit of carpet in front of my back door about 8 feet long which I lay towels over in the worst mud, by the time they get to living room there feet are mostly mud free.

(Laying a towel over carpet works far better then on a hard floor)

Darklane · 11/11/2021 21:38

Small bowl of warm water & towel near the door from the garden. Dip & rinse each dogs paws in the bowl, all four, & rub dry with the towel.
And a good electric carpet shampoo machine.

We clean dogs feet on little travel towel when they come in and have enzyme spray on stand by for bad surprises
