If you have a 50 mile round trip commute, how much do you spend on fuel?

Have just changed from diesel to petrol and I seem to be filling the tank every week!

How much do you spend on fuel for a 50 mile round trip commute?

I have a small car (vw up) and my commute - almost all motorway - was costing me about 10p a mile (so £24 a week, 3x70 mile return trips). I'm working from home a lot more now but I reckon it will have gone up to about 12p a mile, or just over £28 a week.

Pheebs2021 · 11/11/2021 19:51

What engine size and car? That makes a big difference.

Nix32 · 11/11/2021 20:11

It's an Alfa Romeo Mito, 0.9 Twin Air engine, which I think means it is in effect a 1.8.

My daily commute is 65 miles round trip, mostly 60-70mph roads. I get 450 miles from a tank (£65ish) in a 2 litre petrol Volvo V40.

TheFeistyFeminist · 11/11/2021 20:23

50 quid a week on petrol has become 15 quid a month in electricity for a similar commute.

wheresmymojo · 11/11/2021 20:40

I drive a Mercedes A class 1.8 diesel

Commute 2 x per week 50 miles each way (so 200 miles total) plus a few trips to local supermarket.

Spend £35 p/week on fuel.

traka · 11/11/2021 20:49

Why did you change from diesel to petrol?

SockFluffInTheBath · 11/11/2021 20:50

Ooooh. I’m saving for DC to go to uni but as soon as they’re off the books I’m going to treat myself to a nice EV.
AsanteSana · 11/11/2021 21:08

78 mile daily round trip, mainly via slow rural roads, £50/week, 15% of my net salary, 1.5 hours each way, all for long, long hours in a crappy physical outdoor job paying very little above National Living Wage!
Ford Focus 2.0 litre diesel auto, cramped, uncomfortable and makes me wish I'd hung on to my aged Volvo estate, thirsty and expensive, as it was, to tax and insure😏

SirensofTitan · 11/11/2021 21:22

It doesn't matter what anyone else pays unless they are driving your car along your route in exactly the same way as you drive and on top of all those things paying the same price for the same fuel and has their car serviced in the same way

Honestly, you can't compare yourself with anyone else, there are just too many variables.

I'm not surprised that you're filling the tank every week, you're driving 250 miles a week in commuting, plus whatever else you do going out and about in what sounds like a thirsty car.

My last two petrol cars have got around 400 miles from a tank but have had 1 litre engines so probably use less fuel than your car.

If that's the mileage you're doing, it will be expensive in a larger engined petrol car, that's life unfortunately.

InTheLabyrinth · 11/11/2021 22:07

Shorter commute (just over 30 miles round trip), and hope to fill the tank every 10 days. 450 miles in a tank. 300 miles of commute, 100 miles of ferrying kids/weekend, and a little left.

Brokenrecord3006 · 11/11/2021 22:49

I do 40 miles, 5 days a week, 1 litre petrol. I'm filling my tank up a lot more often since it changed to e10. It costs me around £200 per month.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 11/11/2021 23:22

2.0 smallish SUV diesel, do roughly 400 miles a week, fill up every week at around £65. Mainly school run.

FrankiesKnuckle · 11/11/2021 23:35

60 mile round trip. 6 days a week.
Costs me around £3 per week.
I have an electric car 😬

Nix32 · 12/11/2021 11:34

@FrankiesKnuckle Do you have to lease a battery? I don't think I understand how it works

OP posts:
Nix32 · 12/11/2021 11:37

@BarbaraofSeville I get almost 400 miles out of a tank, so judging by these responses it's not as bad as it feels.

It's just been a shock to the system - a combination of moving to petrol from diesel, increased prices at the pump, and more running around now that we're going places again.

The responses are really helpful - thank you.

Blueuggboots · 12/11/2021 11:50

I spend about £40-50 a month on electricity for my electric car which both me and my partner use probably averaging about 500 miles a week between us.

Nix32 · 12/11/2021 12:03

@Blueuggboots Do you have any sort of monthly repayments linked to that - either battery lease or for the car itself?

OP posts:
girlmom21 · 12/11/2021 12:10

It's a tank a week for me too.
1L Renault Clio - very similar commuting distance.
Mostly on motorways.

Blueuggboots · 12/11/2021 12:43

@Nix32, my car costs me £270 a month on top, so between me and my other half, both commuting (we work shifts), it's about £340 including filling the run around diesel we own outright in total.

FrankiesKnuckle · 12/11/2021 12:56

@Nix32 No we own our, and as far as I'm aware a few people I know on salary sacrifice lease cars do not have to lease a battery either.
