Roof cleaning- has anyone done it?

I'm fascinated by cleaning YouTube videos. The pressure washing and garden ones. Now I've been watching roof cleaning. Who knew this was a thing? So has anyone had it done?

No and my friend who is a builder and runs his own firm said unless a roof is leaking or has a very obvious issue that needs fixing just leave it alone.

I wanted it done because our North facing roof has tons of moss on it. Then the birds drop it all over the paths. But I was told don't pressure wash or you might damage the roof. The people I had quote didn't really convince me of the benefit and how long before the moss regrows....so we didn't go ahead.

Pressure washing will take off the protective coating on tiles and make the problem worse. You can clean them but its a long and arduous job that no one but you will notice has been done Grin

Or even unnecessary.

If your rig is over wit moss, it is recommended to clean of the moss but not with a pressure washer. Wait for dry weather, use a long handled broom to sweep most of it off then use the moss clear for roofs . You apply it with a mist with one of those garden pump things , not pressure. The moss dies, you sweep again. Last at least a few years - my experience in my north facing roof in shade from neighbours trees. You should buy eco friendly product safe for birds. Huge difference to my pati too which used to get covered mildew yucky stuff from everything that came if the roof and over flowing gutters that would get filled with the moss. Been doing this sporadically for years

My neighbours though had someone out that cleaned their roof and painted it about 3 years ago Looks fabulous, like a new roof. Don’t know how much they spent but it does look great.

Weirdly enough, I have just witnessed my neighbour power washing his roof. He was standing on the ridge, seemingly without a thought to health and safety - my husband was going bananas! It looks good, but I don't see the point. Another neighbour had his roof cleaned and painted - looks dreadful now as it is all coming off. I think roofs need leaving along, unless leaking.

Good to hear it doesn't need doing. We had the drive and patio power washed a few months ago but then I thought do we need to get the roof washed as well!

My neighbour had it done and all the gunk off her roof washed off onto people's windows, conservatories, cars, gardens, garden furniture and children's garden toys. Being British, we all now quietly seethe at her.

We had it done; the guy said the crucial thing is never to blast the water upwards for fear of breaching the watertight seal. It did look good afterward, but didn't last all that long.

I could imagine that people who have photovoltaic panels on their roofs would need them cleaned occasionally.
