Is it spider season? And how do they get in? 😬

Yesterday I found a large spider in the shower ( fortunately I had not got in yet!) and today in my living room. By large I mean 2 inches or more… is it the weather? Or do they just like my house….

Most spiders that come inside are males looking for a mate. They probably also like the warmth.

Cookerhood · 10/11/2021 22:05

Actually, this article says that they are always there (doesn't explain why the end up in the bath though!

Mummapenguin20 · 10/11/2021 22:06

We get lots in the winter

BeyondOurReef · 10/11/2021 22:08

They don’t live outside. They live in the walls. You just see them because they come out to try to mate at this time of year.

Putting the outside generally kills them. It’s not more merciful than squashing them.

Unreasonabubble · 10/11/2021 22:14

My cat loves spiders! Most fun she has all day! And I have to say that this is the first year since having her that I have not encountered those monster spiders that run across the living room floor just as you start to relax on the sofa. Mainly, probably, because she has caught them and eaten them.

1forAll74 · 10/11/2021 22:16

Spiders can come up the drain pipe in the bath... I have two spiders in my bedroom right now, they have been in the corner of the room, right near the ceiling for two weeks now, I cant tell if the spiders are a male and female, or just two gay males !! I think they most likely came in through the bedroom window, as I have a sash window, which won't close properly, as the sash cord is broken, so there is gap at the top.

The large spiders on the ceiling, never seem to move at all, and can stay for weeks, and never seem to have to eat anything.

Timeisavirtue · 10/11/2021 22:23

I had a big one in my nets yesterday, when I went back a few hours later to move it, it had disappeared so currently is probably roaming my bedroom... hope DP don’t see it, he hates them .

Notcontent · 10/11/2021 22:33

I would love to be one of those people who can just relax in a room with a big spider. Sadly not.

Interesting that they might always be there…. That’s fine by me as long as I don’t see them!

I never get them in the house. I spray inside the inside (skirtings, corners and nooks and crannies) and outside the doors and windows with Indorex. My friend told me about it 2 years ago. I bloody hate spiders.

Notcontent · 10/11/2021 22:39

Interesting information here - consistent with the above - do not read if you are arachnophobic!

Conkers! I shall be laughed off the board but we put one in the corner of every room and I swear we hardly get any!

Thepennysjustdropped · 10/11/2021 22:53

I've heard that about conkers, too. Apparently spiders end up in the bath because houses are quite dry and they are looking for water. But big spiders eat small spiders!

DontPeeInThePlayHouse · 10/11/2021 23:07

Do conkers keep away the cellar spiders? I like to keeps those they take care of the huge dudes for me. I'll have to look it up by I've a photo somewhere of a wee cellar spidey wrapping up a spider 6 times its size. I was well impressed tbh.

Ryannah · 10/11/2021 23:14

Spider season is ending. It’s mainly Sept-Oct though you may still see a few stragglers now. If they’re in the bath it’s because they fell in on their nightly travels and couldn’t get out. A towel draped over the side gives them an exit route.

Da1sycha1n · 10/11/2021 23:24

Mine are very polite and knock at the door. Not let so many in since I got a ring doorbell and can see who it is...

I guess some must come up the drain to get in the bath? And through tiny gaps/cracks. Previous years I've put conkers in the corner of rooms and that definitely worked.

Then one time, I just decided to try and confront my fear of them and picked one up from in the bath. It was a proper big, thick, dark and hairy one. I was shitting it, sweating and shaking but tired of feeling scared of them. Once it was in my hand, I kid you not, the fear just went. They don't bother me at all now.

Thecathouse · 11/11/2021 02:29

If you are finding you have too many indoors keep the little spindly cellar spiders in their corners, they tend to not move around too much and despite their weak appearance they catch and eat the giant house spiders - ruthless killers those cellar spiders

Cookerhood · 11/11/2021 09:17

They don't come up the drain, that it full of water. They get into the bath & then can't get out again because it's too slippery, that's all.

DirtyDancing · 12/11/2021 12:58

We didn't go conker picking last year (covid- just didn't get round to it) and we had a billion spiders. This year I have gone back to putting one in each room and so far.. no beasties!

Foldedsheets · 12/11/2021 13:16

We get hardly any and never any big ones but we do have a cat and two dogs which may be why Smile I am a former arachnophobe (possibly cured by DD giving them names, not sure what else changed so think it must have been that!) but actually quite like spiders now so am a bit sad we don't get more. I have seen some absolute monsters in our garden though, one ran across the patio in the summer and I thought Aragog had come to visit Shock

ChloeCrocodile · 12/11/2021 15:42

They don't come up the drain

So the incy wincy spider song is a lie?!

Cookerhood · 12/11/2021 15:50

He only climbed it when it was dry, he got washed out when it rained! Incy wincy spider climbed up the waterspout, Down came the rain and washed the spider out, Out came the sun and dried up all the rain, So Incy wincy spider climbed up the spout again.

As a poster up thread said cellar spiders are your friend! I watched one catch a huge house spider once and couldn’t believe it!
