Very boring kitchen storage question

Do you decant dry goods into plastic or glass containers and if so, which ones?

I've seen these great containers in John Lewis -

But I'm not sure how many to get or what sizes or what I'd put in them. I have various types of flours and sugars, some of which are used more than others.

Told you it was boring Grin

I decant into the square kilner jars that have the sealed pull off lid. Not the sealed hinged lid.

I store sugar, lentils, cous cous, sultanas, muesli etc like this.

I also have some round glass jars from IKEA.

Has to be glass for me.

Those are lovely. I just use the glass storage jars from IKEA, they work well and have lasted approximately 8 years so far.

Glass IKEA ones for me, great value.
Square shaped ones might technically be a better use of space though.

I have many different makes of large jars but small jars are just empty jam jars, why buy them if you can have them for free ?

Quickchangeartiste · 10/11/2021 20:49

Yes I use those oxo jars ( not exclusively). They are good but take ages to dry the pop up mechanism.
I store pretty much everything in boxes , often still in packets ( like flour) , after a nasty episode with arborio rice infested with weevils.

@Belindabelle so when you say sugar do you mean just caster sugar? I have dark and light brown sugar, muscovado sugar, different types of flour etc. Will I need separate containers for each one??

No. With the sole exception of sugar, I don't decant things into storage containers, because you then throw away the packaging with the 'best before' date on it.

irregularegular · 10/11/2021 20:53

I decant everything. But I like ones that stack as they make better use of space. I put them in the cupboard so they don't have to look pretty, just effective. I have Lock and Lock in a range of sizes. I use them both in the cupboard and also in the fridge.

Thanks. I like the JL ones as they stack. Just need to work out how many I need now!
