I've applied for 60 jobs and still no job :(

Although I'm not that disheartened. Seven of those applications have been in the past week, and sometimes applications take weeks to be reviewed. The stats are as follows: 17% of all applications led to an interview of some sort. When I drill down and only take into account the people who actually got back to me, the numbers aren't so dire, about 30% of applications led to an interview. There's an specific type of role that I've been applying for and that one has a ratio of 26% and when taken into account who actual replied it jumps to 62%. I'm actually still waiting to hear back from 4 interviews. It's hard to not feel down... I know that for the most part it's a numbers game, but it's quite a depressing one. I've also changed my tactics to only apply for that type of role unless something really catches my eye.

I can imagine it is hard not to feel down .... but the right job is out there for you, and I'm sure your persistance is going to pay off. This time next year you'll be in a completely different place!

Try looking up Austin Belcak or James Whittaker for free info (obviously they want to get you into their paid programs but they free stuff is still helpful) about getting jobs without applying online. I’m in a similar boat and will be using some of their ideas as soon as I can. I’m sure the ideas are also useful if it’s smaller places you’re applying too that don’t have automated HR processes.

JunieSpoony · 10/11/2021 16:55

I didn’t even get an interview for the job I was 100% perfect for, so something needs to change 🤷‍♀️

Im not sure if this helps or if its what you want to hear, but sometimes it takes time, never give up:

Right after Uni, I got a non-graduate job. But as you can imagine, this was only planned to be temporary...

That same year, I also applied for a number of graduate jobs, didnt get any luck. Attended multiple 1st interviews, multiple assessment centres, and 2 final interviews. No bueno. Probably did 40 applications.

I then applied for graduate jobs/schemes every year for the next 4 years.

And guess what...I eventually got it! In my 4th year...

Fast forward more than 10 years, I now have recruitment agents hounding me instead.

So dont give up, and keep going at it.

Through this journey I've now decided that I'm only interested in big companies (or at leas very promising start-ups). Most of the job applications go through either workday, greenhouse, or another platform. That being said, they forget to update the status! I don't think applying online is SO terrible. A taken acquisition person got back to me telling me I should be applying for the sr role! She's off for the next week so everything is in limbo.

@Junie did you chase via LinkedIn? I did that with one job today!

I haven’t yet but I will be!

I think the issue with applying online is that with big firms you can often get filtered out before a person even looks at it.

Terribleluck · 10/11/2021 17:05

The main problem @Jenny is that my salary was the higher one at home, and my DHs salary isn't enough to pay our bills, so there's a definite sense of urgency here.

I really reccomend the what color is your parachute book and website- alternative approaches to job hunting.
Also, actively using LinkedIn. Make sure your profile is good, follow organisations that interest you.

Terribleluck · 10/11/2021 17:08

@Junie I don't know if it's industry/role dependent. Almost 4 years ago when I was made redundant, you could tell that my CV didn't even pass the first filter. This time I can tell they're checking my CV because either they take a bit longer to reply and the reply seems a bit more personalised OR they checked my LinkedIn. I also seem to be getting a lot of "we'll definitely check this manually so it might take a while!" That was Spotify.

Good luck OP 🍀

Terribleluck · 10/11/2021 17:24

Thanks @kitkat The saving grace is that almost every single company I check is hiring for that specific role. From Google to places like Monzo. If anything I don't have enough time to apply for all of those roles, and why I think I shouldn't get sidetracked with ones I think I could also do, but where the success rate isn't as high...

That sounds promising, @Terribleluck. Good luck with it!

Thanks Junie!
