Any dentists here? Filling gone wrong.

Not sure if this is right place to post. I really hate going to the dentist and as a result of a phobia hadn't been for years. I went this year and dentist told me I needed a deep filling in a tooth. She encouraged I go for white filling which I paid for privately. Months after it was still hurting a lot whenever I put pressure on it. The tooth became extremely sensitive to everything including food, drink and temperature. I returned to the dentist, had xray and she said nerve looked fine. She said filling looked too high and filed some down. She said white fillings can sometimes cause these reactions but didn't give more info (and I wasn't told this before filling). She said that should fix things and if not a root canal!

The tooth is the same, still hurts so I am returning again. Could anyone advise? Why would I need a root canal if it is not affecting nerve? Shouldn't dentist redo filling? I hate dentists anyway but am quite annoyed she encouraged me to get white filling asap and now I have there have been huge problems. My tooth did not even hurt before I had filling. Also the white filling is directly under a black filling on upper tooth. Could there be some reaction going on? Could the problem be with how the filling has been fitted? Would appreciate any help, I've been having nightmares about it all.

I’ve had this before, the filling was irritating the nerve so I needed a root canal in the end. Sensodyne helped the pain in the meantime.

@Trisolaris with mine it doesn't seem to be irritating the nerve so not sure why I'd need a root canal though. How was the procedure for you?

Deep fillings often irritate then nerve and can take ages to settle. I wouldn’t have it re done as even more will get drilled out and it will aggravate the nerve even more. She probably means she can’t see any infection or nerve death on the x ray but that doesn’t mean it’s not affected. Apply sensitive toothpaste if you don’t already and try not to chew on the tooth too much

Sensodyne do a toothpaste called pain relief (or rapid relief) I've tried a few as got rotten teeth from childhood when dentists got paid for every filling they did and before they put fluoride in toothpaste, consequently always breaking or fillings coming out. To be honest a lot of the time they feel better when the filling comes out🤷 I also have a dentist phobia which was cured by a particular dentist who has since retired😭 so not been since covid and have 5 fillings come out since then, no pain though so long as keep very clean with interdental brushes and use that toothpaste. Sympathy, I'd give it time to settle if you can 💐

Nothing showed up on X-rays, as far as they could see it all looked fine but I was in pain - hence why they concluded it must just have been too close to the nerve and therefore irritating it. That meant that to get rid of the pain the only option was an ‘elective’ root canal to remove the nerve and therefore stop the pain.

It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Like a long filling really. Not too much pain, just takes a while to do. I was properly dreading it but honestly it was ok.

Impacted wisdom tooth removal and dry socket now THAT was painful!

As others say keep using the sensodyne and it might settle down. Mine didn’t after 6 months, hence why they went ahead with the root canal.

Totally unrelated but just seen your username @Trisolaris. Three body problem is amazing!

I had quite a deep filling before lockdown and the tooth was sensitive afterwards, I went back to have it filed down as it curved and kept clinking against my top teeth. Over time the sensitivity has gone. My friend is a dental nurse but didn’t take much notice of me moaning to her Blush

Trisolaris · 10/11/2021 19:48

@Ridingthegravytrain Yessss! No one else seems to have read it!

Dododood · 10/11/2021 22:01

@GingerFoxInAT0phat thanks. How much time did it take for the sensitivity to go?

To be honest it was maybe 6 months, I couldn’t eat on that side for a long time or I would get a shooting pain. Pretty much back to normal now though.
