What age do you stop buying nieces/nephews gifts?

Hear me out!
At what age would you say it’s ok to switch from buying actual gifts for nieces and nephews in favour of e.g. a tenner in a card?
I have a fair few, and no kids of my own, so don’t really know what the etiquette is!
For the older ones I’m fairly sure my gift choices may no longer be in line with what they actually like, so cash feels like a safer option, but I don’t want to seem like I’ve put no thought into a gift either!

What do you do with your nieces and nephews MN?

I have nieces and nephews ranging 20 down to 1. I always just ask if there’s something they’d like or if they are saving towards something and then just go with that.

I think secondary school, so from age 12.

I am childless.
My nieces and nephews on my side will get birthday and Xmas presents until I die(not quite the question you asked)

The ages are 9 to 15. I ask them if they would like money towards something, a surprise (I.e. something of my choice) or something specific.

They usually all request money for Xmas, but my nieces tend to ask for specific or surprises for birthdays.

I get well with them all and buy stuff all year round that I think they may like so money is not thought of as a cop out.

I also give cash to my god children. They have loads of other people buying for them so I think it's a better use of my money.
Their parents all agree too.

We don’t buy for nieces and nephews in my family. Though there may sometimes be a family present - like a board game or jigsaw - at Christmas.

We stopped as a family at 21. To be honest I think we should have stopped sooner as it was getting difficult to find things for teens we didn't know very well.

21 in our family

I have 20 nieces and nephews🙈( not counting DH's 7)
I stopped buying them when they had kids of their own I now have 9 great-nieces and nephews to buy for.
When they were teenagers I gave money £20 in a card instead of presents. I do spend more on birthdays.

I stopped buying for mine when I realised that they actually earn more than I do, and still expected a gift but didn’t reciprocate ever, not even for my kids. Realised that the money was better spent on my own children. I just announced that I was no longer buying for adults and that was that.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 10/11/2021 14:20

I stopped when they were 10 because I got fed up of sending birthday and Christmas gifts and having no acknowledgement, let alone any thanks.
