Anyone had a sigmoidoscopy? How was it? Did you find your results out quite quickly?

I have one booked for next week and I'm really scared Sad

Not pleasant but not as bad as expected. Results were instant could see full colour pictures on tv. I was offered gas and air but didn’t use. It.
It’s a weird annoying sensation but not pain.
They were very good at keeping me covered.
Thinking about it was 10 times worse than having it.

I feel like I'm more worried about the enema beforehand and the results, as opposed to the actual procedure Confused glad it's not too bad though and you find out quickly. Also quite interested in seeing inside Blush

It's not pleasant. They give you the enema and ask you to hold it as long as possible. There were 6 of us waiting and only 2 toilets when I went. This increased the anxiety. The colonoscopy is a lot worse if you have to have that.

I've had a few in my time (I've got crohns). Please don't be scared, it is absolutely fine and you'll be in very good hands. Do they offer a sedation? It's fine without but I had a sedation on my last colonoscopy and I was so chilled it it was brilliant.

It's fine. I was allowed to do my enema at home and tbh worrying about getting that right was the worst part (I had to go to the loo multiple times). It was all over very quickly. I was covered up (only had to pull down bottom part of clothing). I was offered gas and air but didn't use. A nurse kept me talking- asking me chit chat type things whilst the other medic did the procedure. You could choose to look on screen as it was happening or not. I looked. There was just a feeling of pressure at the start and then the feeling of the probe sliding out at the end. I've had worse cervical smears.

The nurse told me that 70% of those invited (over 50 screening) don't respond to an invite and of those that do say they will attend up to 40% don't show.

thanks for the replies! glad it's not as bad as it seems, although obviously not pleasant!

I've heard of sedative being offered for colonoscopy but not sure as it's a sigmoidoscopy if it's different? but i will 100% be asking for one anyway, anything to take the edge off Confused
