How the heck do you COVID test a baby?

Are others doing this? My one year old has acough and runny nose. Our lat flow tests require the tonsils not and there’s no way I could do that. Could possibly do up the nose bit she’s so snotty. What happens with babies if you go to get pcr?

It’s noses only for babies and young children.

I thought it was always nostrils only if under 5. That's what I have done for PCR tests for mine.

CreepySpider · 09/11/2021 19:23

Strapped into the car seat, and gently do the nose (never the tonsils). Too much snot means you might get an inconclusive result though.

Strapped in the car seat is the easiest way, with a biscuit for afterwards

Nose only for babies. I had to swab my 6 month old DS nostril a few months ago, lots of distraction with baby TV on and he barely even noticed.

Thanks!

Nostrils only. PCR instructions say what to do with babies.

Get rid of as much snot as you can before you swab as too much snot will return an inconclusive result.

I live in a European country and for babies/toddlers/children they use the “lolly test”, a swab that tests your spit. It is much more pleasant and just as accurate as the nose swab. I don’t know if these are available in the UK.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 09/11/2021 19:37

Swab the nose when she's asleep!

HelplesslyHoping · 09/11/2021 19:51

I did my daughter's while she was asleep. 4 weeks old, it didn't bother her at all. Either while sleeping or while very distracted. Wipe out the snot first with a cotton bud if needed.

Another vote for swab while asleep!

Thanks! Tried with a lat flow but will get a pcr too.

To be honest, I wouldn't do it.....
