How to remove semi permanent hair dye! Quick!

DD has a formal thing at short notice. She has red dye in her hair which needs to come out or she’ll feel like a dick.

She’s using head and shoulders. Anything else we can try? I’m seeing mentions of vinegar and bicarbonate of soda online but don’t want to muck about with something that might not work/wreck her hair.

It’s a 12-15 wash one and it’s had about ten washes. It’s normally out by now!

Mix baking soda with head and shoulders to a thick paste. Wet hair and apply mixture and leave for about 10 mins then rinse.

Crush aspirin and shampoo together

Her hair is going to be dry after all this

There's something you can biy called colour b4. Stinks to high heaven and leaves your hair very dry so definitely condition right after but nothing else has worked for me to remove red dye

And if you can get to a chemist, there is 'colour out' hair dye remover....
And failing any of these, depending on colouring, dye it a 'normal' colour..

Johnson's baby shampoo always does it for me, supposed to be super gentle but man alive that stuff hates hair dye!

Teaandcakeordeath83 · 09/11/2021 13:22

Vosene. Not the gentle kids one. Red dye is a bugger to get out though as it can stain.

VioletPetals · 09/11/2021 13:57

Red dye, even temporary is a sod to get out.

It might be less damaging for her hair to just buy a second temp dye closer to her natural colour and dye over the red.

Dye over with her natural colour.

I've managed to get red dye out of bleached hair by alternating anti dandruff shampoo, apple cider vinegar, washing up liquid (the green one), over and over. I also used soda crystals mixed with it all cause I got confused between that and bicarb of soda - DO NOT DO THIS! It hurt 😁

My hair felt like straw afterwards but it worked. I've also used the same for bright green and blue dye, all on bleached hair. My friends are always in shock that I have any hair left.

Personally I'd keep going with the washing in anti dandruff shampoo etc (you can mix them all together to make it hopefully quicker). Leave the mix on for 5ish minutes each time. Let it fade as much as possible before chucking a brown dye on it to finish.

Note - I am not a hairdresser but have been dying and bleaching my hair for 27 years.
