Childs small bedroom configuration

If anyone has any ideas id love to hear them. my DDs new room is just 2.7m by 2m, so not big, standard rectangle shape. I don't want to get her a high sleeper for practical reasons but a mid sleeper would be fine. She also needs a wardrobe in there and chest of drawers. Plus space for toys/books and a reading 'snug' (thinking this can go under the mid sleeper - or would I be better getting drawers under that?) i want the room to work for her but dont want it to feel too overcrowded. Any ideas from anyone with DC with similar small bedrooms?

Can you get a wardrobe / chest of drawers combined? She probably doesn’t need a full length double wardrobe. A short ish hanging wardrobe space with drawers underneath would save space.
It’s really nice if you can engineer a bookshelf by the head of her bed as well - easy access for bedtime.
We’ve recently got IKEA platsa storage for our kids rooms - it all fits together v neatly (and easily!) and we are using it as both clothes storage and toy storage - open shelves or with a door on for toys. Wardrobe width is better for toy storage than cubes in my opinion, as the space is more flexible for fitting large chunky things in.

Dc sounds similar size /
Single bed along one side - double wardrobe with drawers and sliding doors opposite wall - window on between. 5ft box cupboard for toys and recently now has a desk with book shelves above.

Lots of floor space left especially if you don't need. A desk in there. Sliding doors on wardrobe makes a difference.

DS2 has a bed with a desk and shortish wardrobe underneath. Then a 12 cube Kallax unit with some boxes and some left as open shelves for display. A chest of drawers with a bookcase over it.

Excellent ideas here thank you, going to have a look at the Ikea website now. I didn't even think of shelving! That would solve a lot of issues. I was trying to work out how to get a bookcase in but shelves at the end of the bed on the wall would be great.

Can I ask, do DCs love having that space under the midsleeper as a reading snug, if any of yours have them? Or not bothered and would that space be better put to use with drawers and storage underneath?

Mine has a similar sized room. We have an ikea wardrobe with 3 drawers at the bottom, wardrobe hanging part in the middle and then cupboards on the top. This is a lot of storage and everything, clothing, bedding etc is kept in there. Then they have a mid sleeper with a 2 cube Kallax storage underneath for toys and a thin bookcase from Dunelm. This leaves enough space under the bed for them to play with their toys and/or read their books.

aikshe · 09/11/2021 11:31

Also mine loves being under the mid sleeper, in fact they have annoyingly taken to going to sleep there most nights and we have to then lift them asleep into the bed 🤦‍♀️

aikshe · 09/11/2021 11:33

This is the thin bookcase.

Dc crawls under the desk and then behind his bed. Apparently it's a "secret reading place". He's 15 Grin

LuckyAmy1986 · 09/11/2021 11:41

@CiaoForDiNiaoSaur Grin I want one!!!

My DS has a mid sleeper with a long 4 kallax underneath. Boxes for toys and books go on top.

We've got built in wardrobes with just a couple of drawers for pants/socks. Haven't needed additional drawers.

It's an IKEA platsa combination. A 80x55x180 frame with 3 20cm drawers in the bottom part and then 120cm doors on the top part with a hanging rail. You can also squeeze another shelf in there at the top if they are still in quite small clothes and put a shelf over the top drawer so you can put shoes etc on there. On the top of that frame we have an 80x55x40 frame attached and then two small doors on there with a shelf inside. (Obviously this will depend on how high your ceilings are.)

Two of my kids have a mid sleeper with a den underneath. There’s IKEA lights on the walls and a rug and bean bag. One of them uses it a lot and the other one not so much!

aikshe · 09/11/2021 12:24

Here is a photo, sorry it looks strange I had to cover my kids in the reflection.

Yes! We also have very similar platsa. It’s great. The drawers go a long way back, so it makes up for them being quite shallow. We have that setup, then another cabinet with a glass door (for displaying The Precious Things), then open shelving next to it.
Word of warning though - IKEA have some delivery / stock issues so we are still waiting on a couple of the drawers and a mirror door to come back in stock. But I’m sure they will eventually, and I don’t regret going for it - much easier than pax to put together.

LuckyAmy1986 · 09/11/2021 16:59

Thanks @Talipesmum! (wondering what The Precious Things are now)!!

My son has the smallest room. When he was younger he had a high sleeper with wardrobe built in at one end and underneath was a bookcase. I also fitted a folding bedroom door which meant we could put the drawers in front of the opening, freeing up much more floor space.

Now he’s a teen so we have replaced the door and he’s in a normal bed with storage underneath, then a slim wardrobe/drawers, drawers/bookcase and desk on the wall opposite. It’s snug but it works.

CokeZeroAddiction · 09/11/2021 17:09

We have a mid sleeper which has four big and deep drawers and a shelf which doubles as the step in.

So books go on the shelves and then drawers - 2 for clothes and 2 for toys.

Also has a wardrobe and a tall boy with overflow clothes. Wardrobe has a shelf at the top and bottom plus the top of it of course and a drawer in the bottom.

Also a soft toy basket.

DukkaDukka · 09/11/2021 17:25

We have this from Argos. It has a pull out desk which the DC like to hide under! It has a big enough gap at the end for a chair as we have a little reading corner.

hennaoj · 09/11/2021 18:39

What about a Tidybooks Bunk bed buddy as a wall shelf for her books? My 13 year old still uses his.

ThirdElephant · 09/11/2021 18:43

Forget the wardrobe. IKEA spice racks turned upside down, painted to match the colour scheme and mounted on the wall. Massive space saver.

Dollywilde · 09/11/2021 18:47

One idea if you haven’t thought about it and it’s practical to do so is to rehang the door so it opens into the hallway rather than the room - bit of a hassle in the hall but makes such a difference in the room if you can.

Svalberg · 09/11/2021 19:12

We went with a moveable hanging rail and narrow cupboards attached to the wall above it rather than a wardrobe, a beanbag under the bed and a very narrow Malm type chest of drawers at the end of the bed, the top of which could be reached from the bed for a water bottle, books etc.

LuckyAmy1986 · 09/11/2021 19:16

You are all so organised I am going to take on some of these tips. Very good idea about the door, rehanging it or replacing it with a folding one, that would make such a difference I think. LIke the idea of a book tidy on the wall as well, rather than making space for them elsewhere.

@ThirdElephant that's genius!

@DukkaDukka would you recommend the bed? I have heard mid sleepers and high sleepers creak a lot!
