We had three electricians round for a couple of days and they asked (politely) if they could sit at our dining room table to have their sandwiches. I said of course, and they told me a lot of people expect them to sit in their van and eat.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 09/11/2021 13:47

Yes of course, plus chocolate biscuits. Our window cleaner is usually here 20 minutes or so, we always offer him one and he usually accepts - he says no one else ever does. Clearly from this thread its not the done thing!

Embarrassingly, I offered the man who came to service our ASHP a coffee the other day, started making it and then had to join a Teams Meeting and completely forgot about him. I went downstairs about 40 minutes later to find he'd finished and gone, coffeeless.

In a bit of a reverse my mum had an electrician doing some work recently and he used to bring her a cake from the bakery nearby. They has tea and cake together, and I bet it improved both their days.

Oh that is lovely @Leftbutcameback

After an hour or so

NeverEndingFireworks · 09/11/2021 13:55

yes, always - interesting about window cleaners - at my last house we had one that timed it so that he got to us just before lunch, would do the back of mine, make fuss of the dogs for 10mins, talk about the dogs he had had and how his wife wanted a new one but he thought it would be too much of a tie at this point........., take his cup of tea and then go have lunch in the van, after lunch he'd finish the front.

Maybe we were the only house in the street that offered one 🤨 never occurred to me not to.

bigbluebus · 09/11/2021 14:05

Never to the window cleaner but most other trades I do if they are likely to be here more than 1/2 an hour.

GoingForAWalk · 09/11/2021 14:10

Yes it's kind of expected that you should offer even if it's just the once. Then point them towards the kettle so they can make their own.

An unwritten rule of sorts.

GoingForAWalk · 09/11/2021 14:12

Not the window cleaner though. For proper jobs a few hours long or so

spiderlight · 09/11/2021 14:30

We don't have a window cleaner, but I offer a cuppa to anyone else who's doing anything, as soon as they arrive and then every time I happen to be making one myself (if they're here a while), with biscuits if we've got any. Our lovely kitchen fitters who were here a week got cakes from the bakery on their last day.

AlwaysLatte · 13/11/2021 12:12

Always make coffee for the window cleaner, he's usually here for a couple of hours - he says he likes our coffee the best!
