" Sainsbury's" Scam

Grandadwasthatyou · 09/11/2021 08:41

A Facebook friend has shared with me what she thought was a genuine offer from Sainsbury's offering a free Xmas hamper and a £15 gift voucher for anybody who applies as long as they comment and share.
I rang and checked with Sainsbury's. This is a scam.

The photos of the supposed hamper include items from Morrison's and ASDA (!! ) and whoever clicks on the link will need to send a text with their details on. Buried in the small print is the cost of £1.50 per text and possibly future charges. A similar scam earlier on this year purported to be from M & S and was worded almost exactly the same.

I have put a warning on the thread but thousands of posters obviously think this is genuine and are sharing. This is so maddening. How do the fraudsters get away with it and who are they?

I can't see anywhere on the post where I can report to Facebook.

There are hundreds of these every day. Free hampers, free games consoles, trips to Center Parcs, brand new caravans and on and on and on.

It always baffles me how many people like and share. I've pointed it out to friends before who always say "I know it probably isn't real but you never know!" You really do know.

Bless you op you sound lovely.

Unfortunately this is part and parcel of SM, its a daily occurrence.

Floofsquidge · 09/11/2021 09:02

If you go onto the Facebook page for the suspected scammer you can report it as impersonating a person or business. Done this a few times and they do take action but just as quickly the scammers will spin up a new page. Facebook desperately needs to improve their KYC for starting a new page.

I don't understand how my friends can believe this is true

I saw this very scam shared by a friend over the weekend. If you look, the account it comes from is called Sainsbury's UK but is unverified (no blue tick) and only has 9000 likes and very little posting history apart from this "promotion".
The real Sainsburys is of course verified and has 1.7 million likes.

I reported it as Fake Page a couple of days ago but it's still up Angry

This has been going on for years - I’ve still got a message from a friend sharing it, it used to be a £150 hamper. The pages get removed and then recreated with the same name.

Report the post as a scam (I’ve just done the same, if it’s the one a PP shared) and warn your friend… she might want to message everyone she sent it to, and if she didn’t manually send it, she’ll likely want to change her passwords.

NameChange215 · 09/11/2021 09:42

Scams like this are shared every day. I'm baffled you had to ring sainsburys to check. No blue tick, posting history only dating back a week and only 9000 likes.
Why anyone thinks that sainsburys will give every single person who shares a post a hamper worth £150 is beyond me. Apparently common sense isn't that common.

AutumnWreath · 09/11/2021 09:46

For me it's the same as those ' amen ' posts of a disabled child / war veteran / animal . I don't know why my friends share those either.

Winniemarysarah · 09/11/2021 09:46

Op this happens hundreds of times a day on fb. You really don’t need to get your knickers in a twist over it. If anyone’s dumb enough to believe that companies are giving away millions of pounds worth of products to anyone who likes them on fb, I honestly think they deserve to be scammed 🙄 for future reference anything legit (which will be nothing as companies don’t give things away for free), will be a well established, old group with a blue tick next to it and hundreds of thousands if not millions of followers. The scam ones are generally newly made pages with only a few posts on full of fake giveaways for people stupid enough to believe it

Gluestick80 · 09/11/2021 09:52

Have you really never seen this type of this before?!

stingofthebutterfly · 09/11/2021 10:00

These scams are so common, but whilst there are enough people that lack the brain power to work out that it's a scam, they'll continue. It's not even a complex scam. It's so obviously not the company in question. What business would throw vouchers at everyone who comments? Cone on, people! Stop being so dense.

RosaBaby2 · 09/11/2021 10:02

They get away with it because people are STUPID.
