Talk to me about ear piercing issues please

Adult dd had her ears pierced, lobes and first piercing, two months ago.
She did everything they told her to do but now they still hurt for hours after she changes the ear rings, which she has to do as still bleeding a bit so they need cleaning.
Anything we can do to improve things ?
She is stressing about it to point of just taking ear rings out and letting holes seal over, which seems a shame having waited 20 odd years to do it !

Some things that helped DD were sea salt rinses. BPA piercing aftercare drops and Prontolind spray both from amazon. The BPA was amazing and reversed a keloid bump on her helix piercing.

TheNestedIf · 08/11/2021 22:44

What metal is she using for the replacement earrings?

Maybe make sure they are pure silver or medical titanium grade, and I'd be using a saline solution to wash the holes with.

MrsFin · 08/11/2021 22:44

I would stop taking them out until they heal properly. Rinse them with the earrings in to get rid of any dried blood.

I was told not to take my new one out for 4 months. Keep it dry for a while and spray it with ear piercing cleaner twice a day. I think it’s a saline wash spray but can’t actually remember.

WeAreNotBowlingWithApples · 08/11/2021 22:49

Get her to leave them alone.

Very gentle cleaning with the earrings in to clean but otherwise no touching, no changing, no spinning or anything.

Just leave them alone for another month at least.

RedCarsGoFaster · 08/11/2021 22:50

What is she changing? Is she putting in cheap jewellery? They may not be fully healed yet.

Noeuf · 08/11/2021 22:51

Stop changing them! It’s two months and sounds like she’s taking them out regularly? Kitchen towel salt water soak twice a day. Then leave them.

scrivette · 08/11/2021 22:52

Agree with PP, I was told that they shouldn't be changed for 3 months and to not touch them at all if possible (apart from cleaning twice a day with saline solution).

dementedpixie · 08/11/2021 22:54

Stop taking them in and out. Dont twirl them and leave them to heal.

CtrlU · 08/11/2021 22:55

What metal are the earrings ?

I’ve got loads of piercings on my face, ears and body and I can only use real gold or titanium jewellery on my holes otherwise the get irritated and start to throb/ weep.

CtrlU · 08/11/2021 22:56

Make sure the butterfly isn’t pushed too tight into the piercing

Cecillie · 08/11/2021 22:56

Thanks all
Jeweller that did piercing said leave six weeks then she could change.
She stopped to titanium medical grade thingy ones.
Has kept same ones in but taken them out every few days to clean them.
Have ordered the spray and drops from Amazon and will tell her to just leave them alone for another month then.

Was it done by a needle or a gun?
Regardless she should stop taking then out. Ears can be cleaned with the earrings in place

dementedpixie · 08/11/2021 22:58

Hmm jeweller suggests it was a gun. Next time go to a piercer that uses a needle

Cecillie · 08/11/2021 23:05

It was a needle
She spent ages planning it and went to place with best reviews
I think her expectations were too high, they said 6 weeks then you can change them, I think she expected them to be all healed by then and is worried that they aren’t.
I think if I pass this info on that it’s normal for them to still be fragile, she will be ok with it .

thesunwillout · 08/11/2021 23:07

Dd had hers done with a needle, titanium.

Did not heal for 8 months.

Protolind or Prontolind spray helped a little.

At around 9 months I gave her some 18ct gold earrings to try, (ones I'd had yrs)

Healed up within 2 weeks.

Bizarre.

ChildrenGrowingUpTooFast · 08/11/2021 23:09

I let mine grown back. After years of just not liking it. It’s not a loss if she can’t get on with them. She’s an adult so don’t make it feels like she has failed. But like other posters say, don’t touch it for a while and let it heal first.

hibye123 · 08/11/2021 23:09

She doesn't need to take them out to clean the piercing. She should just clean around the earring otherwise it's eventually going to close up

CtrlU · 08/11/2021 23:21

Sorry OP

I Meant to say titanium causes me to react also but SURGICAL STEEL or GOLD is what you should be using for fresh piercings in my experience

Noeuf · 09/11/2021 07:14

Surprised a jeweller used a needle - is it butterfly backs though? As a pp said make sure they aren’t too tight. Why has she been taking them out to clean? Hope that wasn’t what the jeweller said!
Leave, clean twice a day by spraying or soaking (salt water or whatever spray they sell you) and I’ve always turned mine slightly at the same time.

Sparkletree · 09/11/2021 07:19

I had mine done 15 months ago and they're still not 100% healed, I've tried lots of different hypoallergenic earrings and the only ones that don't seem to irritate the piercings are solid gold studs.

RacketeerRalph · 09/11/2021 09:00

She isn't using cotton buds or cotton pads to clean is she?

Shesellsseashellsontheseashore · 09/11/2021 10:05

6 weeks isn't long enough. They don't need twisting or cleaning with any solutions. Just cleaning with water running over them in the shower. The piercer I use recommends 10-12 weeks minimum and the above advice. She pierces with a needle and uses titanium only as the skin doesn't heal onto the titianium. My daughter got hers done there and I'd say they only really fully healed after about 16-17 weeks. 5 months on she can now remove them without them hurting or bleeding.
The 6 weeks advice shouldn't be allowed, it's completely outdated.

Bobsyer · 09/11/2021 10:08

If they’re bleeding they’re not healed. She should put back the original studs and leave them alone aside from cleaning regularly. Half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of boiling water - you don’t want it too salty. I like after piercing oil which has tea tree and lavender in a carrier oil but honestly not while they’re sore.

I had my lobes pierced with a needle in August (not my first ones) and they’re only really just ready to be changed out - patience is key with piercings!

Bobsyer · 09/11/2021 10:08

Yes my piercer said 4 months I think. I tried changing them at 2 months and they weren’t ready so I put the studs back in and left them.
