6 nights with 12yo DD. Staying potentially in Bakewell. Will have my car and bikes. Already earmarked Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Heights of Abraham, Matlock Bath Illuminations. What other interesting places might fellow MNetters recommend ? We also want to go to the reservoir with that big round "plug"

The walk up Mam Tor from Castleton via the broken road and along the ridge to Loose Hill is quite straightforward, just one scrambly section, or you could come off the ridge to Castleton at Hope Cross. Or you could walk up Loose Hill from Hope, that’s a nice walk, footpaths, not too strenuous (ok, that’s relative, obviously don’t go hill walking if you are not fit, equipped and prepared).

Peverill Castle is worth a visit
Chatsworth

Bit out of the Peak Park, but Creswell Crags is worth a visit. I think it’s the only site of cave paintings in England.

Crich Tramway Museum is a lovely day out. You can ride as many trams as you want over the expansive grounds and there is a lovely walk too

Crich Tramway Village, I mean

What sort of cycling do you do? There are the easy family trails (Monsal already mentioned) but there is also Tissington, canal networks, Sett Valley, Ladybower loop. If you are more experienced the Peaks have some of the best mtb trails. The Hayfield loop is a classic. Road cycling is also varied - lots of quiet lanes around Buxton.

Thankyou all so much although now you've made me think we need much longer as all the suggestions look brilliant !
I'm thinking Mr & Mrs Gardiner and lizzy's great tour 😂. Maybe I'll meet Mr Darcy

@Unescorted the most basic level of cycling there is, on Dutch bikes 😂

Hardwick Hall (old and new both on same site) is wonderful.

Unescorted · 10/11/2021 21:25

In that case look up the canal network... I ride my sit up and beg along the old railways and canals.

I used to live in Bakewell - it's lovely!
We stayed at the Youth Hostel in Hartington a couple of years ago, in their family room, and would highly recommend it as a base - beautiful building in lovely countryside. If you have kids, it was a great value dinner too! link here

And PS - another vote for Scarthin Books - it's wonderful. In Cromford which is near to Wirksworth and Matlock (both of which are worth a visit too).

I love bakewell, went with DS23 a couple of years ago. Curbar Edge is spectacular.

IWanderedLonely · 10/11/2021 22:12

If you come to Buxton go on the Discover Buxton little tram tour.

I got married in Bakewell

Fruitinator · 10/11/2021 23:26

Don't want to repeat, but agree.... Pools Cavern, Blue John cavern, Castleton, Solomons Temple, Dovedale/stepping stones, Chatsworth and bakewell, Haddon Hall, Ladybower Res, Tissington Trail, Carsington Res, Ilam park, Eyam too.

You'll be about 40mins from Denby- which we quite enjoyed visiting- ace factory shop and tours. Also be about 30mins from Leek and The Roaches. (3 Horseshoes is a great pub)

Ashbourne is a lovely market town to explore, lots of little cafes and antique shops. Alton Towers quite often has events on too out of season, as well as Slash Landings open year round.

If you get chance to stop at the Buxton Crescent hotel it really is worth it, the roof top pool is lovely. The renovations are spectacular. Or catch a show at the Opera House. Loads in Buxton TBH.
