I recall a thread a while back about Laura Ingalls Wilder and how popular her books were with many mumsnetters.

On Friday there is a documentary about her on PBS America at 8pm. It is channel 155 on Freesat.

Ooh thanks for that.
I loved her books as a girl, and also read The First Four Years.
Not sure I will be able to miss MAFSAUS for it though!!

Ooh thank you.
I have fond memories of a primary school teacher giving me "little house in the big Woods" as a child and I loved every one of her books.

Thank you - it’s on to record.

Happy to be of service Grin

I loved reading her books as a child. I remember being given Little House in the Woods one Christmas when I was about 8 or 9. I devoured it, and all her subsequent books. She lived a long time - she was 90 when she died.

i remember getting the books from the mobile library in the school summer holidays

the thrill of seeing th big library bus pull up, then looking through the spines of the books before finding another of her books, that was so exciting to me!!

I'm sure I read recently that her Little House on the Prairie books, which I LOVED, are about to go on the banned list because of the way native Americans are depicted.

RampantIvy · 08/11/2021 23:22

I hope not. They are of their time. We can't and shouldn't whitewash the past.

Thanks for that. I loved her books and recently bought the whole series on dvd on ebay.

A documentary will be a bit sad. She published (perhaps her children published it actually) a more factual autobiography, and it’s not quite as romantic. There was a baby brother and he got sick and died as a baby, and I think one of the reasons they moved was Pa had a bit of an authority problem and drank a lot? I’m a bit hazy on the last bit, i didn’t read it all. The baby brother was just so sad, and so many many families at the time would have had that kind of thing happen and just have to move on.
