Posted elsewhere but didn't get a response so re posting here Grin

Hope it's ok to ask this on here

We are considering Bury grammar and Bolton(but leaning more towards Bury at the moment) for dc, but other than visiting the schools to see how things are, I haven't managed to speak to anyone with dc there (or even anyone who attended).
So wondering if anyone can share their experiences (either school Grin)

I know friends who’ve got children in both schools. I think they’re both pretty much of a muchness, not much difference between them.

My son's as BGS, we have no complaints. As PP I'm pretty sure they're very similar. My son went to a state primary and gets the school coach as we don't live in bury - boys from a wide area attend and I'm sure Bolton's the same. I would genuinely pick the one that's closest or easier to get to. Otherwise it's a bit of a bind as I guess I'm used to being able to walk him to school so having a commute has been a bit of a shock to us both! School itself is good though. Feel free to ask any questions about our experiences if you have any specific questions, I'm happy to be completely honest and have no agenda - nobody I know works there!!

Just noticed you don't give the gender of your child, coincidentally 2 work colleagues of mine have daughters at BGS girls and haven't voiced any complaints either

The only person I know from Bolton was a horrible bully to me at uni (a while ago we’re almost 40)! Arrogant - joined the Met - really dodgy and got kicked out/disciplined for beating someone up. Anyway he went to Bolton.

FallonCarringtonWannabe · 08/11/2021 21:54

Ive friends with children at Bolton and they are very happy with it. Ive a colleague whose children both went through Bury and were very happy with it.

Look at the extras in offer. See what appeals. Although, like a pp, i bet theyre pretty similar.

RacketeerRalph · 08/11/2021 22:06

Yes very similar. I'm friends with people who went to both. I'd say overwhelmingly positive. We're planning for Bolton for DC1 but we're a few years off.

Thank you so much for the replies!

I do like the look of both schools, and am veering towards bury as closer, but I'm worried about how diverse the schools are as we are ethnic minority. I'm worried as dealing with racism at school is difficult, and it causes me anxiety issues (I appreciate there is good and bad in any school system).

Thank you @MrsC2018 , it is for DS, and we too aren't in bury, but it does work our closer than Bolton.

Be careful looking at only distance. Rush hour in bury isnt great and could make the journey longer, depending on where you are obviously.

SweetsAndChocolates · 09/11/2021 14:43

@x2boys I had a good look at the uniform after your comment 😂

Hello!!

We've accepted a place at BGS for our daughter. She did also get a good LA school and is struggling to decide. I went to BGS and had a brilliant experience. Also did the exam at Bolton School (20 years ago) and didn't like the atmosphere there on the day and actually cried at lunch time. I think the schools do differ in their approach still now; Bolton being slightly more serious I would say.

I'm wondering if you did choose BGS in the end and how you've felt about it if so?

The school was quite diverse when I attended and certainly no issues of racism. It wouldn't have been tolerated and I can honestly say I never saw or heard anything. Bullying of any kind would not have been tolerated and that was known by pupils. Expectations are high in all areas. I just wonder if that's still the experience of pupils who attend?

My son is going to Bury Grammar for Junior school this coming September. I think for primary school the difference is at Bolton school its exclusive for Boys whereas Bury grammar has both boys and girls at the Primary division. I've been looking for threads about the schools but this was the only one I can find.
I hope we made the right choice with BGS.

Pedallleur · 17/04/2025 21:02

Bury Grammar has a number of Jewish, Asian and some Afro Caribbean children. Not aware of any racism there.Bolton School always good but not much knowledge about it now.

I’m the original poster, didn’t see replies as I had deleted old account! Searched for the thread as I’m in the same position deciding on schools again, this time with dd.
@BellaR4ds ended up at a state grammar (I didn’t think he would); but am now looking at BGS for dd. Hope your dd settled in well and is enjoying it.
@irishcreme hope your son has settled in well too :)
