Any jewellery makers around?

I'm allergic to base metals, can only wear gold, silver, surgical steel etc. I have many lovely old earrings that I can no longer wear, and there are so many lovely earrings that I would like to buy and wear, but I cannot, because they are mounted on hangers that I can't tolerate. So I want to buy hangers that I can use, and the tools to transfer the pendants.

What do I need to buy? I presumed some sort of jewellers pliers. I've just been looking on Hobbycraft, and I'm bewildered by the selection! Are these suitable? Is there anything else I would need?

Yes. Round nosed pliers would be fine.

Before you get to grips with the replacement wires look at YouTube to see how to open and close the loop without stressing the metal.

You don't open the loop, you bend the closed end back/ to the side. Sounds odd but once you see it it makes perfect sense.

If you look for opening jump rings you'll see it quite clearly.

I use needle tweezers to transfer onto sterling silver fish hooks.

Buy earwires from eBay.

I’d go for surgical grade stainless steel, I still react to sterling silver (from reputable sources) 🙈🙈
I use two pairs of pliers to open loops, one to hold and one to open. Hobbycraft pliers are fine for this. I use flat nosed, as round nosed can put too much pressure on one part of the metal
Echo the advice to open the loops like a gate, to avoid stressing the metal

If you’re not super confident, you could always ask for help from a local jewellery maker, I’m sure someone would switch over the ear wires for a small charge

@Phantom1

She'd still need to open and close the loop! That's why she is asking about pliers!

@WorriedMillie isn't it odd how we do things differently Smile I don't use flat pliers for fear of flattening the wire.

And yes, a local jewellery maker would probably be happy to help. Which might be the easiest solution, especially as you have a few pairs you want changing.
