Fraud on new unused credit card

pinkpanther84 · 08/11/2021 18:12

I'm after some advice to see how this might have happened. I have a fairly new 0% interest credit card which I opened purely to transfer my balance to. I have never used my credit card to purchase something and never intend to. Today I was contacted my the bank to check if some transactions were me- I did call the bank direct to check this was genuine. I asked them how someone could have got hold of my card details if I have never used the card - so the only people who should have the details would be me and the bank but they couldn't help. Any ideas? I've had credit card fraud before but this has been on cards I have used online/in shops. It's horrible when this happens and makes me feel so paranoid and worried

Just to add, the card has been cancelled, none of the transactions were actually successful, and a new card is on its way. I will be cancelling the card however and going elsewhere as I can't trust the bank to keep my details safe apparently!

Did they say how the goods were paid for and whether it was online sales or physical shops?

pinkpanther84 · 08/11/2021 18:16

They were quite dodgy sounding transactions over a range of dates, starting with small amount and going up to £1k plus

Did you ever put it in an ATM to activate it?

Sorry I used to deal with stuff like this and these were the first questions I would ask....

DroopyClematis · 08/11/2021 18:18

Speaking to my ( now ex) banker husband, sorry he's not ex but an ex banker, he said that banks do get jittery about this but you need to approach the bank , again, and ask THEM, to explain how this has happened.
The onus is in your bankers, not on you.

I wasn't quite clear but it seemed to be online, one was a Dutch website

I don't think so, as I was never actually planning on using the card to pay for anything

Thank you. I will try again tomorrow but they were fairly useless when I spoke to them, they just apologised but couldn't offer any explanation

Bots guessing the numbers

@MusingOnStarlight

Bots guessing the numbers
Good suggestion. Could that be the case? Would it not also have to guess the expiry date and security code?

It happens to me once I was in at St. Petersburg (RUSSIA) and my card has been used in Miami.

Just one of those things and sorted by the bank and I was refunded. Another weird one was an Amazon online booze merchant.

It was only a couple of hundred ponds for me. Do you have the banks app on you phone? I do and check my credit cards for fraudulent transactions daily.

Interestingly I was on a cruise and my M & S interest free card was continuously declined to set up my onboard account and I did the online chat and found out that it was because the terminal used (the pos) did not meet their security standards. My HSBC one worked fine so they must have lower standards. ( the pos looked unusual but was bona fide and not fraudulent). Maybe consider M&S.

My card had fraud and apparently my phone was hacked.I’m really careful only use Apple Pay and protected websites. So it was my IP address but the other end of the country . I was told by fraud team at the bank to wipe my phone .

Thanks for your reply. I do have the app, but none of the transactions were shown on there as apparently they were not successful so never really left the account, I guess they got to the 'pending' stage and weren't authorised

It's so horrible when it happens. I was walking of the plane from Russia when the bank called me and I was so confused.

I'm glad they caught it for you. I'm wondering if you could block the card from being used at all in the app so all the transactions would fail. Save you having to do another bank transfer and affecting your credit rating if you are just using it as a cheap loan.

It is horrible, I suffer from anxiety anyway which is well managed but this sort of thing sets me off. I am so very careful with this sort of thing so it seems so unfair when it happens. It would be good if there was an option to stop the card being used at all for any purchases, i'm not sure this is possible but I will see. Thanks for your advice.

Good luck it's called manage cards and I can block/freeze the HSBC one but not the M&S one it says the features are coming soon.
