How do you broach the subject of pay at interview?

I've applied for a job, the pay is hourly from £x-£y which is a £1.50ph difference, a massive difference in my mind.

Anyway, I want the high end of that pay scale, how do I broach it? At interview? Or if offered the job?

I've got qualifications and experience needed for the role. Are they likely to offer me a pay at the moment they offer me the job? I mean I expect they want to be able to pay as low as possible but IMO a £1.50ph difference top to bottom is a lot

I feel like this is something I should know but I've been self employed for over 10 years. For my last employed job which was a long time ago I got a phone call to offer me the job but no pay was mentioned until I got a contract to sign and tbh I wasn't happy with that pay but didn't speak up

I have always waited till I’m offered a job. Say im thrilled and why I’m excited about working for the company. Then I rattle out the 3-5 things I will bring that mean I believe I should receive the highest rate of pay available. And end witj ‘I hope you agree’

But I’ve little experience - am early on and mainly been headhunted (how it works in my area) so power position is different ther

You negotiate that when you've been offered the job at the same time as start dates etc.

You negotiate the pay when they offer you the job. The interview is not the right place except if they bring it up.

Okay, so he emails me or calls me to offer me the job, if he doesn't bring it up how do I? If he does and says "I'd like to offer £x" or "at £x pay" how do I nicely say no I want £y?

Sorry this sounds like it should be easy English bit I don't want to say the wrong thing

You base it on the market, rather than on your current or previous pay. So research the market a little- not just advertised jobs but experienced people in similar roles. Can be as simple as asking a few people you know.

So when they ask you have hat your pay expectations are or offer you an amount , say you’ve researched the market and that you see that people with your experience and qualifications earn in the range x to y. Make sure the lower end of your range overlaps only with the upper end of their range.

If they ask about your current pay, either bring it back to the current market or stress that your last job was along time ago and since then you’ve been self employed, and earning within a range. And again the lower of your range overlaps with the higher end of their range.
