21 month old front tooth chip

Hi,

My DS (21 months) was playing with me and chasing me around the living room when he fell and hit his mouth on a toy, I noticed a white thing on his lip and I instantly knew he had chipped a tooth, it is one of his front teeth and it’s quite noticeable, I took him to the emergency dentist and they said to just leave it be,

I have the biggest mum guilt and it’s really had an impact on my mental health, I have a million concerns running through my head, ‘will the tooth rot’? ‘Will it affect his speech’ etc etc, he has this tooth until his atleast 6-7

Has anyone else’s little one been through this? What was the outcome?, is there anyway of getting it repaired?

Thanks in advance
Xxx

This happened to my DD at about the same age. It went a bit darker than the other one but was OK. She lost her baby teeth late so it was ages before she got her new big tooth. But she did and then we forgot all about it! Please try not to worry.

This happened to my dd at about 17mo, I was 9 months pregnant at the time so being completely honest I don't think I've thought about since then (16 months ago), and she's totally fine and been the dentist quite recently, so no issues.

Ds fell when he was 1 and bashed one of his front teeth back up into his gum. It stayed there till he had it removed at the dentist when he was 5. Caused him no issues at all, doesn't remember anything about it. He learned to speak just fine with it, the only time his speech sounded slightly odd was for a week or so when his adult tooth grew in to fill the space he was used to. But even then it was very temporary.

I was so upset, I don't know why. It was his front tooth, I felt awful about him not having perfect wee teeth any more. Every time he smiled for a long time it upset me. Reading that back I realise how ridiculous it sounds, your toddler smiling at you is just lovely, their bashed up front tooth doesn't change a thing. But that's how I felt.

You know, it's only a tooth. And a baby tooth at that. My friend fell off her scooter when we were 8 and broke both her lovely new front teeth in half. She had to get them pulled out after only having them a year or so and wear false teeth for years.

I understand exactly your feelings, I was the same. But with the benefit of hindsight I can tell you now there's nothing to worry about. It will be fine. It's only a tooth.

My DS hit both his front teeth and they turned grey when he fell off his scooter. He's still not old enough to lose them but he seems just fine. He's having a few problems with speech but nothing to do with the teeth. It's a bit 'do as I say, not as I do' but don't feel guilty.

Thank you all! That’s very reassuring xx

DD did this at the same age. I was expecting discolouration and all sorts but the tooth wore down so the chip was only noticable if you knew about it. Shes now 7 and despite the dentist saying it will be the first tooth to fall out, its still there.

I know it seems dramatic now but you'll laugh when you look back in the future about the concern over a tooth that was going to fall out anyway.

Just wait until they take a chunk out of one of their adult teeth... (bitter experience!).
