So 40th birthday coming up in March, planning city break for me and DH, we are looking at probably either Edinburgh or Dublin, although open to other suggestions? Which would people recommend? And specifically where to stay/what to do in either city would be great! Small ish budget for 3 nights x

Edinburgh 1000000 times over Dublin.

I wasn't impressed with Dublin. Belfast much better.

But Edinburgh has it all.

WheelieBinPrincess · 07/11/2021 09:12

Edinburgh over Dublin DEFINITELY.

Dublin is good for a laugh but if I was going that way I’d pick Belfast over it in a heartbeat.

MrsGeralt · 07/11/2021 09:13

Edinburgh for sure. I enjoyed a ghost tour in the old town if you like that kind of thing. The camera obscura is fun. Edinburgh castle is worth a look.

I've been to both Dublin and Edinburgh and Dublin feels a lot less friendly and there's less to do. If you do go then the library at trinity college was interesting, and the zoo was good and easy to get to on the bus.

I love Edinburgh - one of my favourite cities. Would live there if I could!

WheelieBinPrincess · 07/11/2021 09:15

I did like the Guinness factory in Dublin, and we actually stayed at Trinity College which was fun- they rent out the rooms as hotel rooms in the holidays.

I’d still pick Edinburgh as there’s way more to do. Loved the ghost tour.

Dublin

MadeForThis · 07/11/2021 09:21

Edinburgh all day and I'm Irish.

Mary Kings Close, ghost tours, Christmas market is starting in a few weeks. Public transport is fantastic. Wide range or hotels and restaurants.

PegasusReturns · 07/11/2021 09:22

Both are great cities.

In Edinburgh the castle, ghost tour, royal yacht, bus tour are all worth doing.

In Dublin the castle, ghost tour, Guinness or teeling tour are good. The zoo and dead zoo are also worth a visit.

Both cities very accessible and easy to walk around.

catchyjem · 07/11/2021 09:23

I enjoyed Dublin way more than Edinburgh. I thought it was much more interesting and had more to see and do. Strange that others felt the opposite!

Anothermnuser · 07/11/2021 09:24

I love Dublin but, without a doubt, Edinburgh. Beautiful city and far, far more to do.

Northernsoullover · 07/11/2021 09:24

Dublin was dull. Edinburgh I absolutely loved.

Lanique · 07/11/2021 09:25

Edinburgh all day long.

Goldentimes · 07/11/2021 09:26

Dublin! The craic is ninety! Viking water tour, the Guinness factory, Kilmainham jail, the GPO, Botanic gardens, Glasnavin cemetery. Trinity college and the book of Kells, Malahide castle, wax museum, the Laughter lounge comedy nights, any wee pub for a pint of the black stuff and a trad session. The list is endless

Goldentimes · 07/11/2021 09:27

@Northernsoullover

Dublin was dull. Edinburgh I absolutely loved.
There's seriously something wrong if you found Dublin dull!!!!!
kitcat15 · 07/11/2021 09:28

Edinburgh every time.....although Belfast is good to

peppersauce1984 · 07/11/2021 09:31

I would say Edinburgh, but if you haven't already been I would chose Belfast over Dublin any day. It's friendlier, more accessible, cheaper, more to do etc. Lots of great places to eat too and great music scene.

ParkheadParadise · 07/11/2021 09:34

I like both.
Dublin is my favourite. You will definitely receive a warm welcome in Dublin.
I've spent many happy weekends getting drunk, meeting lovely people in Dublin.

Goldentimes · 07/11/2021 09:35

I'm definitely biased but as others have said have you considered Belfast? Much much cheaper than Dublin and Edinburgh but such a great friendly place (outside of Marching season lol). Titanic musuem, black taxi tour of murals and peacewalls, Kelly's cellar for a trad session, a show a the grand opera House, Lady Dixon rose gardens, botanic gardens, Ulster musuem. Folk and transport musuem, Helens bay beach beautiful walk, Giants causeway is only an hour and a half away if you wanted to squeeze that in to x

fellrunner85 · 07/11/2021 09:35

Definitely Edinburgh. I like Dublin and have friends there who I stay with pretty regularly, but there's far more to do in Edinburgh. It's just better Grin
Would love to go to Belfast though.

Philandbill · 07/11/2021 09:36

Definitely Edinburgh.

RampantIvy · 07/11/2021 09:37

Far more to see and do in Edinburgh IME.

Kangaruby · 07/11/2021 09:37

Saying same as others, Edinburgh over Dublin, but Belfast is dark a horse and worth considering

Indoctro · 07/11/2021 09:41

Edinburgh most definitely

DoctorSnortles · 07/11/2021 09:44

Edinburgh. Hands down.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 07/11/2021 09:45

Dublin, definitely not Edinburgh.
