Is this blood pressure dangerous and what should my mother do if it is?

Posting on here for quick replies. DM has tested BP at home today several times and it's 190/79. Does this constitute an emergency, and what should I do? No other symptoms. She is 73 and general health is good. Thank you.

Yes she needs to get medical advice.

InTheLabyrinth · 06/11/2021 16:58

Why has she measured it today?
If she normally measures it, and this is a big spike, it is more urgent than if she might generally have high blood pressure.
It needs seeing, but as to if it's an emergency or not is up for debate with the level of info given.

I agree get some medical advice.

Yes that's very high if she doesn't have form for it & a diagnosis that explains it. Mine can get that high & it's safer for me as I have a diagnosis that covers it. I'm told to seek medical attention if it goes over 200 for long though.

IIRC otherwise anything reasonably sustained at over 180 needs to be seen urgently by a doctor, so probably A&E, otherwise a GP appointment ASAP

RockinHorseShit · 06/11/2021 17:10

Oh & yogic breathing ... YouTube

Lying flat on the floor with feet above the heart & drinking lots of water can help

111 might suggest an aspirin under the tongue, they've done that with me before

QuornSausagesAreTheDevilsPenis · 06/11/2021 17:12

It is high, I'd maybe call 111 for advice. It depends though, do you/she know what her 'normal' is? Is it massively different?

If she feels otherwise well why was she testing it? Is it the same in both arms btw?

Bookridden · 06/11/2021 17:31

She tested randomly on a neighbour's machine. She's never had high blood pressure before as far as I know. I'm trying to persuade her to call 111, but she doesn't like to fuss, argh

Is 190 the highest it has been? How old is the neighbours machine and is it an arm cuff? Is this the first time she has ever checked it?
We wouldn't class this as a medical emergency, but it needs reliable readings over a few days before initiating meds usually. Anything over 140 consistantly we would treat.
How old is she? It could have been that high or similar for years. Thousands have raised BP but have no idea.
Seek proper medical advice for reassurance.

purpleme12 · 06/11/2021 17:49

Well I wouldn't call 111 or go to A&E

My blood pressure was frequently higher than that and must have been for a long time. It does need an appointment at the GP so they can give one of those 24hr monitoring things to see if the reading is correct

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 06/11/2021 17:54

If she feels normal, I wouldn't be worried about immediate medical attention, but she should see the gp for a checkup next week.

cherrypiepie · 06/11/2021 18:10

It's very high but not a 'crisis' so call either GP first thing on Monday Or 111 if she is not fit and healthy.

I am not medical - DH was diagnosed two weeks ago and have been monitoring and googling like mad.
