Taylor's and Morrison's own-brand coffee bags. Are they any good ?

I used to buy Lyons' No.4 but the quality has dropped and the price has increased a lot so I'm looking for a better value replacement. I saw these in Morrison's today but I'd like an opinion or two first. Thankyou.

Oh, also good for coffee drinking guests if you’re not a coffee drinker.

Talipesmum · 07/11/2021 09:30

I buy these on amazon for camping and for occasional use at home if can’t be bothered with cafetière - they’re very very good.

Moreish Coffee Bags - Smooth Colombian Fairtrade (50 Single Origin Coffee Bags) (can’t make link work, sorry!)

Thankyou Talipes. When I need some more I'll try the Morrison's ones, if only to avoid a delivery charge. I'll look on ebay too.

@RobertaFirmino

I love Taylor's Hot Lava java but I leave the bag in for 5 minutes. The suggested 2 minutes is useless. Percol Colombia bags are quite nice too.
Came to say exactly this. I use them when camping or out walking and they make a decent brew but you ha e to leave them longer than the two minutes.

I have strong opinions on this and have conducted extensive research!

If you think about how you make coffee, the water needs to percolate through the grounds; it isn’t an infusion like tea. Therefore the tea bag style are always a bit disappointing. You need the Sainsburys Taste the Difference ‘drip’ coffee bags. You unfold them and separate the little cardboard arms, which hook on to your cup and form a little bag to pour the hot water through. They make very good coffee.

The challenge with coffee bags is that it's difficult for manufacturers to retain the freshness in that kind of packaging format, hence the weak taste. I'd rather drink a decent instant than a coffee bag!

Brewandhoney · 08/11/2021 07:18

I changed to filter cone and a v60 pour over coffee. Just as quick. No mess. You just bin the paper cone!

Haven’t got the time to repeatedly clean a caffettiere at work and can’t stand instant!

Brewandhoney · 08/11/2021 07:19

(As in, stick the v60 on top of your mug, not into a jug!)

I had the Morrison's ones for camping, they were passable but not strong enough for me. I usually use a cafetière

On the contrary: the individually sealed packs keep the coffee fresher than an opened pack of ground coffee which takes a week or two to finish.

Of course if your point of comparison is freshly ground beans then all bets are off. I have a grind and brew machine and have taken to making extra in the morning to put in a Thermos.

Give whittards a go. Online. 10 bags for a fiver or four pounds if you subscribe. They have 4 kinds..really lovely..

Ragwort · 08/11/2021 09:27

I only drink ground coffee but for years I have just used a cone over a mug with a single paper filter, so easy and no mess ... I used to take it camping, I keep a spare cone at work ... I have tried coffee bags, but think they are far too weak.

I use these but they've not been available in the town centre or the rather large Sainsbury's near us for over a month
Talipesmum · 08/11/2021 11:27

The ones I’ve bought are definitely not weak - in fact my H thinks they can be a bit too strong and is careful about not leaving the bag in for too long. It does say to leave the bag for 3-5 mins and give it a good squash against the side of the cup - goes against the grain when you’re used to teabags!

Talipesmum · 08/11/2021 11:29

Also - we usually use a cafetière and that’s much more an immersion / infusion process than percolation, so I don’t buy what you say, @BarkminsterBlue Grin [fighting talk…]

BarkminsterBlue · 10/11/2021 16:13

@Svalberg they disappeared for a while but they were back in my big sainsburys when I went yesterday!
