Does anyone else genuinely not care about their nails? At all?

I'm pondering this after reading another thread about nails, which made me realise how much I just don't care about my nails.

It's not that I have more important things to think about - I waste oceans of time on trivia. And it's not that I am above caring about appearance - I would kill for great hair, and an often consumed with envy of someone's slender ankles (I have cankles).

But nails? Why do people care about those?

I have perfectly bog standard nails. I might paint them once in a while. But when I see "done" nails all I ever think is "eh." And yet it is a MASSIVE industry, with shops everywhere, and they are well used. But who is it for? Who loves these big nails?

Is this an age thing? It probably is. I'm in my 40s.
@KeflavikAirport how about when you visit a salon that very clearly is not supporting human trafficking? Hmm

Honestly, if you don't want to take care of yourself / look nice / feel better / do it just for yourself then fine. But it's a bit of a reach to tell those of us who do like to look presentable that we are poor feminists supporting modern day slavery
I disagree that having your nails done is taking care of yourself. The ingredients in nail polish are pretty toxic and you will be ingesting small amounts of it when you eat with your hands, absorbing it through your skin, etc.

Iamanunsafebuilding · 06/11/2021 20:30

@TuftyMarmoset that is literally not true

Dreamstate · 06/11/2021 20:59

@yantantetherapetherapimp

Gels wrecked my nails too. Never again! I couldn't believe the state of them after they were removed. Awful, I nearly cried.

@Iamanunsafebuilding nail polishes commonly contain toluene and pthalates, and nail strengthening ones can also contain formaldehyde

GrabTheDayByTheBalls · 06/11/2021 21:37

I don't nearly 40 years of nail biting to very very short. Never had them painted even. Even my wedding day they looked awful.

itbemay1 · 06/11/2021 21:45

I care about them but never get them done. Just file them when they are looking long and keep the cuticles neat. I'd love to be able to have them done but can't be bothered with the upkeep and not allowed polish at work

flippertyop · 06/11/2021 21:48

I never used to until shellac became a thing. Now I love having my nails done - I go every two weeks ans they look fabulous but then I am generally quite groomed so it goes with the rest of me 😀

Newbabynewhouse · 06/11/2021 21:56

🎶Fingernails and pretty..fingernails are goood... seems that all they ever wanted was a maaaarket Grin🎶

I can take it or leave it but i do feel much better when all my nails are same length, filed and have a shiny gel polish on.. just makes you feel better

Newbabynewhouse · 06/11/2021 21:59

Ooops typos! Nice little foo fighter song there 😋

Newbabynewhouse · 06/11/2021 22:05

@groundcontroltomontydon

🤣 You look like a burst pie???! 😱 This made me laugh ...im sure you do no lool like a burst pie! 😉

addictedtotheflats · 06/11/2021 22:07

Me. Im a nurse and cant wear nail polish at all. If im on annual leave for a week there isnt any point. Ill paint my toes if im wearing shoes which show them. Sometimes ill just paint the ones showing out of the end of the shoe 🙈 I bite them, they don't seem to grow or be strong unless im pregnant. Totally not a nail person

Newbabynewhouse · 06/11/2021 22:09

@TuftyMarmoset

Hey..i hope i dont offend you in any way but ive heard that nails with a shape similar to what you descrived could mean a deficiency? Probably not the case but just thought I'd mention incase you didnt know and it was something like that...

Newbabynewhouse · 06/11/2021 22:10

@addictedtotheflats

Do you bite your toenails? 😅 xx

RoseMartha · 06/11/2021 22:12

I dont bother with my nails either. I trim them when necessary and thats about it.

I do paint my toenails in the summer.

RockinHorseShit · 06/11/2021 22:18

I might bother once in a blue moon if going away or somewhere special to go to, but in general, I'm exactly the same. I don't get the all faff about fancy talons tbh. Pleased to say DD is the same

Keladrythesaviour · 06/11/2021 22:25

I spend absolutely nothing on makeup, get my hair done once every year or so. Spend most of my time in dog walking clothes, but I'll admit I love having my nails done. I don't do it regularly, mostly just for special events, but having shellac nails just makes me happy! I am guilty of peeling them off after a few weeks and totally destroying the nail beneath though, so I probably shouldn't be allowed them.

Ladyrattles · 06/11/2021 22:26

I'm almost 50 and I bite my nails, so I've never really done much with them in adulthood. I did use nail polish as a teen but I'm not really bothered these days

PufferFishGoneWrong · 06/11/2021 22:26

I don't have time/ care about stuff like that. Nails short 99% of the time. Not something I think about, also very rarely wear any make up. Dove soap and garnier moisturiser- it's the only thing I can use on my face.

VetOnCall · 06/11/2021 22:27

Me, absolutely zero interest. They're clean, short and healthy and that's it. Long fake nails give me the heebie jeebies and I don't know how they're hygienic or how you get anything done with them. It would be completely unsuitable for my job, and I do CrossFit/weightlifting 6 days a week which is rough on the hands, fake/long nails wouldn't last 5 minutes.

I occasionally paint my toes in summer but painted fingernails just aren't me. I've had to have them done a few times in the past when being a bridesmaid but cleaned it all off the next day each time - it feels weird seeing them painted, just doesn't feel or look right to me. I have great hair and eyebrows (if I do say so Grin) and get them done very regularly, but nails are just not on my radar.

Timeisavirtue · 06/11/2021 22:30

I don’t care either, I bite my nails, and after seeing people struggle with simple tasks with the,, I find them unpractical.

Fr0thandBubble · 06/11/2021 22:31

I keep mine short and use a glosser to make them smooth and shiny. I think those awful acrylic nails, fancy designs, glitter, different patterns on different nails, etc. are really naff I’m afraid.

Besides, I couldn’t bear to spend so much money on something so frivolous!

Dazedandc0nfused · 06/11/2021 22:53

Never had my nails done. Doesn't appeal to me. But to each their own. A quick trim ever other week suits me as I don't like them long. Occasionally I may paint them with clear or black nail polish.

Katkinsgreyy · 06/11/2021 22:57

I used to always paint my nails. However I work in a hospital so can't have long, painted nails anymore.
I don't miss it

coodawoodashooda · 06/11/2021 23:23

I hate fancy nails. Not on other people. Just on me.

PickAChew · 06/11/2021 23:26

Of you saw my post, I keep them short and neat and that's it.

Anything on them actually hurts. And looks shit the minute it chips or grows out.
