French supermarket must buys!

Just that really; looking for some great suggestions of things to bring back from a french trip. Ideally non refrigerated things, there is only so much we can eat of fresh stuff before it all goes off.

So far I’ve got confit tins, chestnut puree, tins of french beans, fleur du sel….

Wanted also to bring some fresh fruit/veggies back, what is in season at the moment? Heard about Bertranne apples. Going to try to fit in a market as well.

Cashmere and stationery suggested by a Friend In The Know.

Any cookware/tableware things to look out for?

Also - does anyone know the ‘rankings’ of french supermarkets, quality/price wise? Is Auchan better than E.leclerc for example? Or Carrefour….

@darlingdodo I’ve never seen anything like it. I might have to start a separate thread to see if there’s a reason for the mouse theme? Reminded me of hedgehog flavoured crisps back in the day. Like road kill themed food

There's absolutely loads of those mice in the chiller aren't there...there must be the demand for them, am wondering what so many people would want them for? Dinner party centrepiece? I can't imagine plonking it on the table here as I serve up the sausages, chips & baked beans 😂
On the plus side I ordered more storecupboard supplies from French Click and am really pleased with them again. Loving my Petit Marseillais shower gel. Just wish I lived further south so I could do a French supermarket day trip

I'm so going online shopping tonight !!
I need peanut puffs

I think I might have bought some of those - do you mean like a snack? A coated peanut? I picked something up which is BBQ flavoured which looked like a coated, puffed up peanut.

We are very lucky to live less than 2 hours from Folkestone, so just able to do a day trip, though knackered at the end of it. If it helps, I noticed that I could stop at the Premier Inn in September for £35 which is 5 mins from the tunnel. Already thinking about a return trip with my eldest (who is now 18 and I want her duty allowance 😆)

Seeing other posters mention Chocopic makes me smile-
always a huge holiday treat for my DC-who are now all in their 20's-
and I was starting to do a shopping list for this summer's holiday and first thing one of them said was Chocopic!!

My DP is a peanut puffs fanatic, so we always bring plenty back when going across to France, as they're pretty hard to get in the UK.

However, we've discovered that quite a lot of local Polish/Eastern European food stores have them, so worth checking out any you may have locally.

The little shop in the entrance of my local hospital sells peanut puffs! (A German brand)

@queenofarles I know this is a bit of a zombie thread, but this site might be worth keeping an eye on? I've hinted down European Lindt finds on it!

Rotisserie chicken rillettes- the food of gods! Also salmon rillettes. Both available in all supermarkets

French supermarket must buys!
evtheria · 17/05/2022 10:07

Don't want this to be a zombie thread, we're visiting France this summer and I am so excited to go to the supermarket! Taking notes 👀

Sunshineandrainbow · 18/05/2022 13:28

Has anyone been across as a foot passenger for the day? I can't drive on the right.

JingsMahBucket · 18/05/2022 17:34

PersilPower · 09/05/2022 09:24

@JingsMahBucket cooler bag essential IMO. Do you have one of those pull along trolley ones? We picked up one in TK Maxx a few years ago. Would be great on the train.

Ooooh I’ve never known these have existed!! I’ll take a look online. Thank you @PersilPower. it would be perfect if they can fold down into your luggage too.

JingsMahBucket · 18/05/2022 17:38

@MbwaKali that’s a great mark. I usually get duck rillettes. Can’t wait to snuggle up with some in my hotel room 😀

PersilPower · 18/05/2022 18:23

@PersilPower SWEET! Thank you!

Just fine back to add:

Listel rose (normally about €2-50 a bottle, it's £10+ here)

And from a pharmacy

Fervrex sachets, they're for colds/flu and literally whip the a*se if anything we can buy here.

Strepsils -the ones in a white box with blue and black, they're the ones with lidocaine in. Whilst DD was waiting to get her tonsils out they're the only things that have her any relief from her monthly tonsillitis

We go to France several times a year normally (day trips and holiday) and am having such bad withdrawal symptoms, thank you for helping me indulge.

PS Intermarches are good too but they are more supermarket than hypermarket sized

I agree with the Fervex-I got some in Tenerife when my husband got a cold, and it knocked it out after only a few doses.
@saraclara Does La Vache Qui Rit taste the same as the English Laughing Cow?

PersilPower · 24/05/2022 20:30

If you love proper French chocolate mousse, I can recommend the Michel et Augustin brand. Not the light fluffy stuff we get here, I picked it up In carrefour when I visited last week and had plenty of use by date. Just had some tonight OMG I was transported to a little bistro on a cobbled street in small town France!! Yum

CormoranStrike · 24/05/2022 20:35

Saving this thread for my summer holidays

ICanSmellSummerComing · 24/05/2022 21:15

Oh lord what a fabulous thread.

Why is petit.marseille so good?

Thread like this shouldn't be lost!

hellswelshy · 28/05/2022 11:58

On our way to France today, so will definitely be doing some French supermarket browsing and will report back 😁

Youmeanyouvelostyourkey · 28/05/2022 12:47

55 days until we get out very delayed 2020 holiday so watching with interest and expanding our normal list.
the hypermarkets tend to do a 3 pack of duck breasts which are both huge and taste amazing. Massive jars of Amore Dijon mustard cheaper than the tiny ones here. But our biggest purchase are the refills of hand soap in the squishy tubes. We usually bring back enough to last a year.🙃

CormoranStrike · 28/05/2022 13:18

two weeks till I go to France, cannot wait

InvincibleInvisibility · 28/05/2022 13:35

Marie Morin chocolate mousse is the best. They do large family sized jars. Delicious and cheaper than Michel et Augustin.

Finding this thread funny as I live in France and don't buy 10% of what has been mentioned!
