rhesus negative

Not sure if this is in the right place but anyway.... is anyone else a rhesus negative mum?
I had my son 37 years ago very young and I just found out he's rhesus negative too so no problems there.
Then 15 years later I lost two babies one after the other with the partner I was with, had no idea why at the time.
Turns out looking through my medical records I had never been given anti D and the foetuses must have been rhesus positive.
Even though it was a long time ago they must have known about rhesus disease in the 80's, surely it was medical negligence?
I'm not looking to claim anything it's way to late but just wondered if this has happened to anyone else.

They knew about it in the 60s although this was pre Anti D. I was the RH +ve baby of a rh -ve mother and at least one of my older siblings must have been rh+ve

You wouldn't have needed Anti D after your rh-ve son though. There would have been no chance of antibodies.

I'm so sorry for your losses OP. I'm rhesus negative, born in the 70s and had to have some sort of treatment at birth because I was the second baby my mother had. My older brother is also rhesus negative.
I'm a blood donor so I've known my blood group for ages, it was on my records and I was really shocked that I had to push and ask for an anti-d jab when I was pregnant with DD, and this was in the noughties! It would be really easy for anyone to be unaware of their blood group and potential issues with it.
I hope you're ok now 💐

My lovely grandmother was so worried for me when she heard I was rhesus negative because she lost more than one baby late in pregnancy because of it in the 50s / early 60s.

However you only need the injection if the baby is rhesus positive, not if they are negative. Nowadays they routinely give it in pregnancy then check the baby’s blood group after birth and give you a follow up injection only if the baby is positive. So I don’t think that would be the cause of your losses.

I’m so sorry for your losses. It is very hard especially when there is seemingly no explanation / reason behind them.

TreeLawney · 06/11/2021 09:58

And it is only for second / subsequent babies where the earlier ones have been positive so you have developed antibodies.

Sorry I haven’t explained that clearly.

But as your first dc was negative, you wouldn’t have developed antibodies. So wouldn’t have needed the injection.

If your first baby was Rh- then you wouldn't have needed anti-D as you wouldn't have had antibodies. At what stages did you have your miscarriages as if under 13 weeks they don't offer anti-D either? Lack of anti-D may have had nothing to do with your losses and you would not know what blood group they were. Sorry for your losses though Flowers

dementedpixie · 06/11/2021 10:09

P.s. anti-D isn't usually given until the 3rd trimester and then after birth if the baby is Rh+

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 06/11/2021 12:19

Sorry for your losses OP. I'm rh negative amd so is my mum. My brother is older and he is rh positive. I know she had anti d with one of us, think it was me. I had anti d when pregnant but I'm not aware of my DD's blood group.

dementedpixie · 06/11/2021 12:26

I dont know my dcs blood group but they must both be Rh+ as I had anti-D after both births after their blood was tested (I am Rh-)

VenusStarr · 06/11/2021 13:24

I'm rhesus negative and have had 5 losses and never had the anti-D injection because they were before 12 weeks. If yours were after 12 weeks, you should have been offered it.
I'm sorry for your losses x

I'm rhesus +ve , born to a rhesus -ve mother in 1990 and was in SCBU for a week with rhesus disease from birth. I was her second +ve baby (no problems for my older brother, it's only bad for subsequent babies). I don't believe she was given anti-D, which seems mad.

Sorry for your losses. If they were early then I believe Anti D wouldn't have been administered until late pregnancy

Theunamedcat · 06/11/2021 13:55

I'm reasus negative after my first I had anti d they said at the time it would protect me for future pregnancy complications with 2&3 I was given a routine anti d jab and more after they were born so the guidelines must have changed

modgepodge · 06/11/2021 14:16

I’m rhesus negative. They were able to test my daughters blood while I was pregnant and find out she was positive, so I had anti D at about 30 weeks, when I fell over later in my pregnancy and again after the birth. I was given the impression not all trusts had started screening the baby’s blood before birth (this was in 2019) and those that didn’t were just giving all negative mums the anti D in the third trimester as standard.

tobypercy · 06/11/2021 15:28

Also anti-D doesn't always work.
I'm -ve and DH is +ve so I was given anti-D at 5 months, but my DS was born Coombes positive (meaning the antibodies caused problems despite the anti-D). He was fine in the end, thankfully.

I do think there is a poor knowledge about rhesus sensitisation among the medical people I've discussed it with, and that's in the last decade. I must admit I do wonder if my sensitisation is one of the factors causing later miscarriages. Not much I can do about it at this stage though.

Oldraver · 06/11/2021 17:02

My Mum is B- and I am her first, also B- . My brother is RH+ and she did build anti-bodies after his birth ( I believe she gave blood to donate for Anti D but not totally sure)

I had my first Anti-D after pregnancy in 1981 then subsequently in 1985/86/88/90 and 2006 et, so it was known of when you had your first PG

As others have said though it's possible you lost pg's could of been RH+ so not the cause of the MC's, though frankly I think it was negligent not to be given Anti-D...

I have frequently back in the 80's and 90's had to encourage friends to get Anti-D

Oldraver · 06/11/2021 17:02

Sorry that should of been...your lost PG's were RH-
