We seem to have taken quite a lot on, so just interested in what others do.

Between 2 dc we have things on most days now.

DC1 has 4 afterschool clubs a week. DC2 has 1 afterschool club, weekends horseriding lesson

Thurlow · 06/11/2021 08:59

DD(10) has drama, swimming and Brownies, and has also just started a musical instrument. DS(5) has football and swimming. They both have after school childcare several times a week as well. I think we’re probably at our max here!

MsWalterMitty · 06/11/2021 09:01

DS 12 has non. But I go for a run/mountain bike ride/or to the climbing wall with him each week.

DD8 Does cubs and Dance after school on different days, then mountain bike and climbing wall with me.

DinosApple · 06/11/2021 09:03

Two DC, two clubs these days.
They used to swim and do brownies together. Now one stays late at senior school once a week and the other does a club one evening.
They like their downtime.

Hayup · 06/11/2021 09:04

3 at the minute;
Swimming lesson
Dance lessons
Cross Country

DD wants to try other things like brownies/beavers gymnastics and horseriding so we may add another activity in in the spring.

InDubiousBattle · 06/11/2021 09:06

My 7 year old does Taekwondo and Beavers and my 6 year old does a dance class once a week (she on a waiting list for Rainbows/Brownies and will do that too). They migh start a music lesson each next year if there's something they fancy and are prepared to commit to.

Simonjt · 06/11/2021 09:07

Three

Swimming once a week
Dance twice a week
Rugby once a week (although I run the sessions, so him attending or not makes zero difference)

TheChosenTwo · 06/11/2021 09:08

We’re largely out the other side of the burden of clubs Grin
Just the youngest now, ds (10) and he does football on a Saturday morning which dh takes him to mostly, and an after school football training one day a week.
Dd2 (15) does rock climbing once per week but goes after school as a school club.
I loathed the swimming and dancing years and was over the moon when they tailed off!!

Bellfor · 06/11/2021 09:09

Dc1 4 a week.
Dc2 6 a week.

All done at school though so no running around for me!

happytoday73 · 06/11/2021 09:09

My eldest does scouts and one sport (so training once in week and fame at weekend)
My youngest does too much... 2 sports so 2 matches at weekend and two training in the week, cubs, swimming and tutor... Would normally have finished swimming by now but covid means behind

RicherThanYew · 06/11/2021 09:10

None. We want him to have swimming lessons (he is keen) but our onky leisure centre is/has been a vaccine place since they came out and there is no end date in sight yet.
We offered rugby, football and martial arts but he only likes doing those things in school with his friends because they have a coach there.
Still trying to find a kids wrestling team which is what he really wants to do. I am considering a language lesson of some type but the tutors are £45 an hour and its a block booking/contract situation Sad

Gardeningtipsneeded · 06/11/2021 09:10

Too many. I’m an overscheduler and it’s a weakness of mine.
DS9 has climbing, tutoring, drama, football, Cheder and football
DS5 has swimming, keyboard, football and rugby

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with keeping them quite busy tho. I think a bit too much attention is given to letting them “decompress/relax/chill”. They do plenty of that and I’m not sure they need to do another few hours of it a week.

devildeepbluesea · 06/11/2021 09:11

DD is 8 and does Brownies, drama, netball, rugby, swimming, multi sports and gym. She's also started singing lessons in school hours.

3 of those are provided very cheaply or free by the school or the Urdd (Welsh youth organisation). Brownies is cheap as chips anyway. The pricy things are swimming and singing.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/11/2021 09:13

Fortunately at the moment they do Swimming, Cubs and Rugby at the same time. Fortunately and unfortumately, elder DD will soon move on to Scouts so will be a different evening (but escaping her younger sister will be good for her! They are in different swimming groups currently and I try to keep it that way even if its inconvenient to me)

OhamIreally · 06/11/2021 09:22

Drama club at school
Singing lessons
Saturday drama club
Flute lesson
Tutor

And we go swimming once a week together.

Would like to add a physical activity into the mix.

GuyFawkesDay · 06/11/2021 09:25

DS12 does scouts and drama/musical theatre.
DD8 does swimming, brownies, dance x2 a week. She will be adding 11+ tutoring next year too.

They both play hockey on Sundays too. Definitely not much scope for more!

BlackRedGold · 06/11/2021 09:25

Primary age Dc currently does 4 (plus a weekly musical instrument lesson during school hours).

Teen does 4 activities outside of school, (plus lunchtime clubs at school on 2 days.)

Most of the things they do are in walking distance, so it's not too onerous, and a couple are straight after school so we can still eat as a family at the normal time.

They each do something at a different time on a Saturday, which means it seems to take up most of the day, but they have both made a commitment and been doing it for years, so I am happy to support.

MargaretThursday · 06/11/2021 09:29

Currently dd2 does 3
ds does1 (but 4 times a week)

When younger they dd2 did a lot more. Ds has never been as keen.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 06/11/2021 09:33

DS has just started music lessons during school hours and attends another club run by the school once a week. He also does 3 other activities outside of school, one of those is swimming lessons though which he probably won't continue for much longer as he's a confident swimmer now.

ShakespearesSisters · 06/11/2021 09:34

Both of mine, dd9 and dd7, do swimming, football and brownies. Dd9 also does squash and drama.
Something on every day except Friday and Saturday.

Bdelder · 06/11/2021 09:54

Drama, Rainbows, multi sports

I have a primary teacher friend (20+ years experience) who says she can tell who are the children that are over scheduled with extra curriculars. It’s not good for most kids as it leaves less time to talk, relax and self direct their activities, do homework. She says over scheduling can have negative impacts and it’s been getting worse.

Personally I do wonder if parents overschedule so they don’t have to spend more time with their children!

Nc123 · 06/11/2021 09:59

Both my little ones do kickboxing and swimming, and the bigger one has just joined Cubs as well. That seems about right for me - you have to have some undirected time.

LlamaofDrama · 06/11/2021 10:06

DD11 does 3 hobbies, but over 8 sessions a week. That includes musical instruments so also practising needed. We are regularly concerned that she's over scheduled but she loves all of it, loves being busy and manages to fit everything else in as well so it seems to work for now. I suspect over the next couple of years things will drop off.
