Hi there. I am on universal credit after giving up my job when I had a baby. He’s just turned 3 and now I need to spend 35 hours a week job searching and looking for a 16 hour a week job….I’m looking to work from home so I can still be there for my son. Any suggestions?!? I’m at a loss and panicked Confused

What sort of job did you have before?

ChrissyPlummer · 05/11/2021 19:59

Most employers would expect you to have childcare in place, not be looking after your son while you’re supposed to be working.

From when my son was a baby, I went back to work part time and he went to a childminder.

You get help towards costs and there will probably be childminders close to town or on a public transport route if you don't drive.

RandomMess · 05/11/2021 20:04

If you're working you can't also be looking after your son so either way you need childcare.

You can't work whilst looking after your child. You need to have childcare whrther you work in or out the home.

Lots of jobs are remote working now, including civil service

I work from home full time and have a 14 month old. He goes to the childminder full time.

Working from home jobs are not there to look after children.

I have 45 minutes hour lunch break and 2 x 15 minutes breaks a day.

I'm expected to be at my desk at all times working when I'm not on my break (apart from toilet breaks of course or to accept a parcel at the door).

Lucky you @Cruiser123 I think this week (and I don’t work on a Friday) I’ve spent 40 hours at my desk. I had one lunch break!! OP sorry, it’s really rubbish but wfh does not give you time to look after your child.

What are your qualifications and work experience? You do still need childcare, although home working means no commute, so you’d need less childcare.
