Unsure whether to take DS for an x ray?

DS12 injured his foot at school yesterday, he was playing football (not in kit just in his uniform so no shin pads) on his lunch break and someone wearing proper studded football boots slide tackled him
He has quite a nasty cut on his ankle but it is also very swollen, not just the area where contact was made but his entire ankle all the way round
However he can move it and walk on it and it’s not massively sore to do so

My first instinct was to get an x ray just in case it is broken or a fracture and him walking on it is making it worse, but the fact that he can walk on it makes me think possibly not, this is why I didn’t take him yesterday but the swelling still hasn’t gone down
I don’t want to waste A&E time (or mine tbh)

What would you do? 🤔

A very swollen ankle from an injury would be classed as an accident so suitable for accident and emergency or a minor injury unit.

Your DS will be assessed and xrayed if the clinician deems this necessary

Agree with above I would get it checked out

Just because he can move it and weight bear don't mean it ain't broke OP, it might be worth a trip to get it x-rayed.

I know people who've walked on broken ankles.

It's cheaper for healthcare services to intervene early. It's not a waste of time.

DietCokeChipsAndMayo · 05/11/2021 15:47

Oh no @bloodywhitecat & @ftw163532 that’s exactly what I was worried about!
Ok off to A&E we go 🤦🏻‍♀️

I hope it turns out ok.

I walked, badly, into A&E with a broken ankle, fibula fractured just above the ankle joint. I was sent to xray and as I was walking back they came running with a wheelchair for me as they'd seen the fracture on the xray. I'd say take him.

thesugarbumfairy · 05/11/2021 16:07

get it checked OP. You can indeed walk on a broken ankle. I know many folk who have done so (including DH - who didn't get it checked for years by which time of course it had fused wonkily)

DietCokeChipsAndMayo · 05/11/2021 16:11

I’ve never broken a bone, I find it absolutely wild that you can break one and still put your whole body weight on it Shock

Do you have a minor injuries unit near you? Usually faster than A&E and should have x ray dept

ponkydonkey · 05/11/2021 16:23

I have 2 sons and They have broken things at skateparks and football , but I didn't realise as they were still hobbling around 😬😬

MrsGeralt · 05/11/2021 16:32

Yeah id get that checked.

thesugarbumfairy · 06/11/2021 21:52

OP @DietCokeChipsAndMayo is your DS OK?

For me it did hurt but I could walk. I was told with two bones going from knee joint to ankle, fibula and tibia, and I broke the thinner bone so although it hurt the thicker bone was acting like a splint for it so I guess it depends which bone you break and how badly e.g. if it is displaced.

I've broken a bone in my foot and again I walked into the hospital. They said I have a high pain threshold.

Bontanics · 06/11/2021 22:34

I walked around on broken ankle for months. GP said it was just a bit swollen. Needed several corrective surgeries to put it right.

Go for xray.
