Moved house - need new utilities provider how to save money or avoid problems?

Hello,

I am looking for some advice about what to do about utilities. We have just moved house. I attempted to transfer our existing gas and electricity tariffs to our new home because I am aware of the current very high prices. This was with SSE and they wouldn't let us do this. They've quoted a huge increase to supply us in the new home.

Every supplier I have looked at, including the current provider at the new address (Scottish Power) are very high, or saying 'stick with your current provider', which obviously we can't do.

It is worth shopping around or should I contact the current provider at the new address and set something up with them?

I am concerned some companies may go bust, and I'd like to be protected from spiralling costs - but not sure how best to do this.

Sorry just to add the current provider Scottish Electric have quoted online £242 a month for gas and electric. This is a big increase from what we paid before on a better tariff.

There is a slight variable as to being fixed price for 1 / 2 years. I'm not sure if it is safer to go fixed for longer or not in this climate.

We can probably afford it, but it will make life harder. I really feel concerned for the many people who will struggle with fuel poverty - it feels very stark.
