Is it possible for a sonographer to wrongly diagnose twins?

Just that really. I had a scan today that picked up (very) unplanned twins at 6 weeks and I just wondered if it’s possible for them to get it wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Very unlikely. Years of training and usually years of experience.

Congratulations 😊

Hm2020 · 04/11/2021 18:46

Doubt it but congratulations must be a shock

Twickerhun · 04/11/2021 18:46

I was carrying twins at 6 weeks but one didn’t make it and disappeared. Known as vanishing twin syndrome. So whilst the sonographer is likely to be correct about what they see you can’t gaurentee what’s next

Would be very rare as there would be two heartbeats

museumum · 04/11/2021 18:53

Unlikely to be a mistake but it's very early at just 6 weeks so there is a chance that both might not make it.

Poonmig · 04/11/2021 18:59

Thanks all - I am thrilled but just shocked!

We have had spotting hence the early scan. It was too early for heartbeats, just feral poles, so fingers crossed they both hang in there. Thanks for replying!!

It's a big shock for you, OP. Give yourself time for it to sink in. Flowers

I have twins. I think I cried for about two days when they were diagnosed, but it's fine. Hard work, and a whole different experience from what I'd imagined, but makes up for the hard work in other ways Xx

Poonmig · 04/11/2021 19:00

Fetal! They aren’t feral yet.

6 weeks is pretty early to see a HB.

Have you been given a date for a repeat scan?

Poonmig · 04/11/2021 19:02

@crunchymum Yes, next week. Feeling sick about it tbh.

You'll know more next week.

I know its very trite but it will all be okay... whatever the outcome.

gogohm · 04/11/2021 19:06

I was told dd was a twin but I lost it early on around 8 weeks, vanishing twin

Poonmig · 04/11/2021 19:08

@Twickerhun and @gogohm I’m sorry to hear that Flowers

Congratulations and Good luck Flowers I was told twins at 8 weeks and kept asking g statistics of getting it wrong. Rang my go after to ask her too!! Shock
There was very little evidence they ever get it wrong!

But like that it was v early and was told of possibility of vanishing twin syndrome.

They are almost 6 now!! Wink

Congratulations!

Skyla2005 · 04/11/2021 20:33

If they saw two heartbeats there's definitely two but 6 weeks is very early and at the 12 week scan they may not still both be there. Good luck and congratulations

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 04/11/2021 20:48

@Poonmig

Fetal! They aren’t feral yet.
Give em time

Congratulations and good luck 💐

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 04/11/2021 20:51

My twins were spotted during a private scan at 10w

They will be 4 soon and feral is definitely the word!

Good luck OP, you never know with pregnancy but here's hoping for you!

hollyhocksarenotmessy · 04/11/2021 20:54

They can sometimes miss one - could be triplets 😁
