Going into London

I haven't been to London for a couple of years, used to go all the time. I have a random day off tomorrow and thought I would pop in during the day. Other then mask wearing on the tube anything else I need to know? Any good free or cheap things I can do on my tod?

Nothing I can think of other than mask wearing on public transport.

DD and I are going to Borough Market in the morning then to a museum, as examples of free things to do.

Palavah · 04/11/2021 19:35

What kind of thing do you like? I'd go to a museum or gallery, walk through one of the parks, mooch around covent garden, maybe sit in the public gallery for a trial if they are open again, go to a lunchtime recital, walk along the river..

Go and check out the Fortnum and Mason Christmas shop. If I had a solo day in London, I'd be hitting there, Selfridges and Harrods purely for the Xmas displays

Some places are still asking visitors to wear face coverings and advising pre-booking. Good idea to check in advance if you're thinking of going to a museum or gallery.

Theblackdogagain · 04/11/2021 19:47

Thanks all, I was thinking of maybe v&a or tate modern to look round, Christmas shops are a good idea as well. I'll love to do a matinee show bit have to get back for the kids, where could I go for a lunchtime recital?

Film at bfi ? See a show ? Some theatres release tickets as day tickets

Nitgel · 04/11/2021 19:53

British museum is good

Theblackdogagain · 04/11/2021 19:56

Some great ideas, I never knew about lunchtime recitals, a church is having a mixed piano concert for free, sounds amazing. So that's museum, Christmas shops, lunchtime recitals with food sometime and then home. Thanks for planning my day

Check that you don't need to book to go to the Tate or V&A. All the museums and galleries (even though free) were requiring bookings over the summer to manage numbers and social distancing. Not sure if that's now stopped.

LOLeater · 04/11/2021 19:57

Have a lovely time! If you are near St Paul’s at all take in Postman’s Park and the memorial to those who have sacrificed their lives for others. We liked the Museum of London (excellent cafe cakes) and Millennium Bridge. Have a great day!

DameAlyson · 04/11/2021 19:58

Some City churches have lunchtime music, or they did before Covid. Google might help. A bit out of your way if you go to the V & A, but not too far from the Tate Modern.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 04/11/2021 19:59

We went over half term. Make sure you're booked into anything you really want to go to ie NHM galleries, restaurants etc. We went to a fab restaurant near the NHM Mama Pho totally recommend that.

Covent Garden is also nice for a mooch around.

The changing of the guards at Buck Palace is only certain days but I think worth a visit and it's free!

Someone else has mentioned Borough market, very busy when we went but a great atmosphere quite expensive but the food is very good quality.

Have a fab time xx

You need to book rate modern!

It’s free but you need a ticket

Fupoffyagrasshole · 04/11/2021 20:00

I love taking the clipper boat !!

corlan · 04/11/2021 20:02

You have to book for entry to Tate modern at the moment. This exhibition looks fun though www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/exhibition/hyundai-commission-anicka-yi

Theblackdogagain · 04/11/2021 20:10

Thank you, ticket for the tate now ordered. That exhibition looks really cool.

It’s great actually we took my 14 year old step son and he really enjoyed it too

sashagabadon · 04/11/2021 20:41

Tate you definitely need to book time slots. You can do it when you arrive in London on your phone but may have to be flexible on time. It has these weird floating electronic jelly fish floating about atm

Theblackdogagain · 05/11/2021 17:36

Thank you for the suggestions, i did the tate modern, piano recitals in a church then walked to Covent garden. Marvellous weather and beautiful city structures.

Be prepared for the fact a lot of people sadly aren’t wearing masks on the tube now too!

hollygoflightly · 05/11/2021 17:40

So glad you had a good day - beautiful weather for it!
