Has anyone had pancreatitis?

I have this at the moment snd it is awful. On Monday night I woke up in very severe pain. I spent all day yesterday in A and E and they were going to admit me but didn’t.

What happens next? I have been referred for a scan to see what could be causing but that is it.

I have been reading up on it. It seems very common to have your gall bladder removed. This happened to my mum. Does this always happen.

Yes but mine was a reaction to medication

I am not sure if it is usual to be admitted to hospital (what it says on the NHS website) or sent home. I am happy to be in my own bed after the chaos in A &E but it is worrying.

Not me (although ironically I had a gallbladder scan today, but anyway…) my DF has had pancreatic issues for years and has bouts of pancreatitis fairly regularly. He’s never been given the option of gallbladder removal. He has some medication he takes before and during eating. Anything complex or rich or fatty and he takes a higher dose.

When he has an attack coming on he fasts, and reintroduces food slowly after some days of having small meal replacement drinks. On a couple of very bad attacks he’s has to be in hospital simply for IV pain relief.

Hopefully yours is something simpler and won’t be recurrent? His is down to a poor diet and booze, basically. He won’t change his ways.

Yes as a reaction to Gram (chickpea) flour, it's taken many years of pain to finally narrow it down to an allergy

I have never had it but I am a nurse on a surgical ward and look after at least one patient with pancreatitis every shift. I am very surprised that they didn’t admit you, it can be a serious condition and if nothing else you would probably benefit from some decent pain relief.

Generally there are two main causes, which are gallstones, and excessive alcohol intake. Sometimes it can be a reaction to a medication and sometimes it can just come on with no apparent cause. I imagine the scan will be to look and see if you have gallstones. In the long run if you do have gallstones then the only way to solve the problem is to have the gallbladder removed but it doesn’t always happen straight away.

I hope you are feeling alright and are not in too much pain. Try and drink plenty of water and keep an eye that you are weeing ok. If your pain increases or you start to be sick or just don’t feel quite right then please please go back to the hospital to get checked Flowers

Yes I had it. It was unbelievably painful and occurred as a result of something going wrong with my gallbladder. Nobody was bothered in A & E so I just had to go home and self treat. I recovered eventually.

I suffer with chronic pancreatitis, would rather give birth to a lawnmower than deal with the pain that it brings, so you have my sympathy. It could be you’ve got gallstones which is usually the case & they’ll find that when they scan you. I’m sure you’ll have been given the advice to avoid alcohol & try a low fat diet, some people can’t eat spicy things either. Everyone has different triggers to what can set it off so try keeping a food diary. Hopefully the pain eases for you ASAP!

My husband was admitted to hospital after an attack at work. Looking back he had several episodes before but thought they were very bad indigestion (I was clear they were not but he would not listen to me or go to the doctor). He actually worked 60 miles away and ended up in a hospital miles from home, on the high level care ward (down from icu) nil by mouth and catheterised. He eventually was moved to a normal ward but in total was in there for 17 days. He was sent home and put on a waiting list for gallbladder removal but had another episode within a month and admitted to our local hospital which bumped him up the list as at this point they were talking kidney failure as a possibility. He had his gall bladder removed and been fine ever since but it was an awful time. In total he was off work 4 months and lost over 4 stone in weight. His scan originally didn’t clearly show any stones but when they removed the gall bladder they said it was full of “sludge” ie very small stones and the gall bladder itself was “perished” ☹️

I had it 3 times I went a lovely shade of yellow the first time after being in pain for 10 days I was admitted to hospital. Mine was caused by gallstones. I was still on hospital recovering from the first bout when I got hit by the second. I was let home after two and a half weeks and supposed to be back in a fortnight to have my gall bladder out. 7 days later I was back in hospital with bout number 3 and I had my gall bladder removed. Ive not had a bout since

Thank you. I did expect to be admitted as I was in A and E for 12 hours and they fitted a cannula to give me fluids but didn’t actually give me any fluids. They were very busy and they probably didn’t have enough beds. They did give me dihydrocodeine which was amazing.

I have been having milder symptoms for a while. So the diagnosis makes sense. I was very sick but haven’t been for a while so I will probably be ok. It sound like it is likely to happen again😢.

Hi guys, I 30 and I was diagnosed with pancreatitis aged 13 and underwent a major operation to save my pancreas. Since then I have not had any major pains I deal with it by watching what I eat and doing exercise however iv been finding it difficult trying to get pregnant, 4 years now and 2 failed ivf attempts. Couldn’t my illness be linked to the reason I am struggling to conceive??
