Child with fever

My son aged 7, came home from school tonight with a fever of 40.1. Just complaining of being tired, heavy legs, blurry eyes. He watched TV, ate and drank a small bit went to bed at normal time. He normally runs very hot with a fever. No convulsions previously.

Definitely not covid as we've all had recent covid infection.

Gave ibu at 3.30pm. Calpol at 7pm. Just gave him ibu again at midnight and he's sicked it up.

Unsure what to do now. His temp is 39.7 and he's gone back to sleep which he obviously needs. He woke up at 11.30pm to use toilet and was sick, so I waited till he was asleep before sneaking him a bit of medication.

I know I shouldn't give him medication to bring down a temperature only because it seems high. But...

I'm on the phone to 111 for 10 minutes and waiting. Very high call volume which I guess means I will be waiting a long time for a nurse call back which is what I want.

Just could do with advice about next steps. Can I sleep Grin etc!

Can’t advise but just a hand hold and a bump for more knowledgeable people. I’d be doing exactly what you’re doing, plus maybe sleeping near him with a bucket and towels in case he feels sick again and can’t make the bathroom… good luck with the nurse call back.

Ahh thanks so much. Took 111 nearly 20 mins to answer the phone so I'm waiting for a call back. Couldnt even advise me how long it would take and considering how busy the phone is I doubt it will be soon.

Will keep checking on him through the night I guess!

He normally gets very hot but rarely if ever vomits so not sure what to do if he temp keeps rising Confused

Just to be clear, I'm not concerned he's really ill, I'm just wondering how to manage his high temp through the night.

Give paracetamol and/or ibuprofen if they're unwell for comfort, I think that applies here www.nhs.uk/conditions/fever-in-children/

Thank you Flowers he vomited up ibuprofen immediately so unable to give him paracetamol or ibuprofen at the moment.

I will try with paracetamol and check on him in a couple hours I guess.

Have you got a fan you can put near him or open a window. Keep up with the regular paracetamol and ibuprofen and plenty of fluids
