Formula fed, gassy and only taking small amounts

Hi all, im am struggling so much with my 7 week old with feeding. Where to start.... she has always had a bar latch, on breast and bottle. I have tried, TT, MAM, NUK, Avent, and Boots and have ordered TT anti colic bottles now. She doesnt have a tongue tie.
Since birth she has only ever drank about 1.5 - 2oz of milk and still the same at 7 weeks. She then will get fussy and want to feed more but just scream and arch her back and wont take anymore. Ahe has been on Infacol since 2 weeks old and ive just changed her to Colic drops as dont think infacol was doing anything. She was on Mamia formula, and ive just changed her to Cow and Gate comfort, but feel this might be giving her more trapped wind?
Im just at a complete loss on how to get her to feed more or how to get rid of this wind if thats whats causing all this.
What should i try next, as dont want to keep chopping and changing if im making things worse. But also dont want her to lose too much weight or end up dehydrated. GP and HV said its just a trial and error until something works....
Hoping someone can offer some advice.
Thanks for reading xx

This sounds very familiar
My daughter had silent reflux and was put on gaviscon and was much happier as a result

My now 15 month old only ever too 2-4oz of milk every 4 hours.

At 10 months she started talking 5oz (was eating food by then as well).

I never managed to get her to take any more, tried everything too.

Weirdly, she grew just fine, born on 3rd centile, up to 50th by 8 weeks and stayed there despite only taking less than half the milk she should have been in 24 hours.

Oh, and the little she did take had to be fed while she was drifting off to sleep until she was 11 months old or she wouldn’t have any of it.

It was just bizzare Confused

My first was a colicky baby. I breastfed so cant say how much he drank. But every ten minutes, I’d have to burp/wind him and then resume feeding. His feeds could take an entire hour to complete because of this. Which left next to no break before starting the feeding process all over again.

At 7 weeks, it was 2oz every 4-5 hours. I drove myself crazy with it.

Sorry I’ve got no advice. We tried gaviscon, different milks. She just bloody hated milk!

My son was similar. It was a mix of reflux, colic and CMPA (the latter being diagnosed very late on).

Have you tried gripe water? We'd give him a syringe of that about 10 minutes before his feed and we would wind him between every 1-2oz, and he could then take the remainder of the bottle much better.

DobbleDobble · 02/11/2021 21:23

I’d try colief, beats infacol and gripe water. It was recommended to be by a health visitor as both my sons had severe colic, within a day of adding this to the formula milk it worked.
Also when making up feeds, after shaking an mixing well let the bottle rest, too many bubbles from shaken milk add to wind.
Please try the colief , read up on it, it breaks down the lactose in formula milk to aid digestion of it.

How many hours between feeds?

If it's less than 2 there's your answer

Could be wind? A need to suck and not drink? Or tired needing a nap?

All of the above can be confused with being hungry

ponkydonkey · 02/11/2021 21:25

@DobbleDobble yes I also agree with shaking the bottle and getting it really mixed up... and leaving the lid off and let the bubbles settle

I know you say she doesn't have tongue tie.... But it sounds so much like tongue tie that I couldn't not mention it again. My dd1 tongue tie was missed by a minimum of 14 NHS health care professionals- midwives, health visitors, paediatrician, infant feeding team/ peer support, GP. Thought I was going insane. Finally at 14 weeks as a last resort I took her privately to a lactation/feeding consultant who immediately saw and felt her tie. Cut within 5 minutes and feeding improved dramatically, was off reflux meds within a week and colic symptoms stopped too. I know I'm not the only one who has had TT missed repeatedly....

Best of luck finding a solution. Feeding battles are horrible. Xx

But also dont want her to lose too much weight or end up dehydrated

Has she lost weight? Is she showing signs of dehydration?

If not it may just be her. I had a friend who gave up bf as baby fed constantly, only to regret it as they were exactly the same on formula, only had 2 oz at a time so she was making bottles constantly.

Does she have a dummy? Could it be a desire to comfort suck?

What teat size are you using? My DDs always got like this when they needed the next teat size up. They get frustrated as it’s not flowing fast enough and start refusing to feed and taking very small amounts. At 7 weeks you should have gone up a size teat.

I found this out on here when DD was doing the same. Someone recommended on another post that you try making one of the teats you have a little wider on the next feed using a needle on the tip of scissors. That way you’ll know if it is the cause of the problem.
