How long do a pack of 10 socks last your child?

6 months? 8 months? A year?

On the other hand I'm expecting the pair of rugby socks I've just bought my 8yo to last until shes 18 as they are the most ridiculously sized garment I have ever purchased. Size 1-6, one child is a 2 and the other 4 and I reckon we could fit all four feet in one sock with space to spare. They are the same length as younger DDs legs.

Redcrayons · 02/11/2021 16:55

I usually buy a couple of dozen per year. I very rarely throw any away, and yet I’m not overrun by socks. Where they go, nobody knows.

idontlikealdi · 02/11/2021 16:57

I have no idea where they go, mine wear odd socks at the weekend most of the time.

About a month. They go missing. I have no idea how

mayblossominapril · 02/11/2021 16:59

3 months ish, some survive longer. They wear out really quick and I line dry them or they get divorced from the their mate who is never to be seen again. I thought I was bad with socks but DS is dreadful

Unsuremover · 02/11/2021 17:02

A ten pack, becomes 3 pairs in a week. Then those 3 times pairs are treated like the Crown Jewels. Then at some random point he will declare they felt “weird” so he checked them.

Porfre · 02/11/2021 17:02

So it's not as fun for the kid
But plain black socks. Make sure they are a little larger. So if shoe size is 3. Should be bigger than this.
Always buy the same one. So if you lose one it doesn't matter.

If I buy patterned ones. I always buy two or three packs of the same. And then when you take them out of the pack. Take the same design out of each packet. So three lots of socks but the same design. So one from each pack.

This way even if you lose one sock you've still got 5 of the same design left.

If I buy one pack of patterned they wont even last a week, before I've lost one of each pattern. But by doing the above they last a lot longer even if you've lost some socks.

peboh · 02/11/2021 17:06

About 2 weeks. They just disappear, and I don't know how or why. I'm literally replacing socks constantly.

Thinkbiglittleone · 02/11/2021 17:08

Probably 10 days, they just disappear !!

HaggisTheGreat · 02/11/2021 17:16

Years. They are socks. They stretch. And who cares if they look worn out - they are hidden inside shoes/slippers. The white ones for school get bleached occasionally….

rainbowandglitter · 02/11/2021 17:35

Until he's grown out of them. I barely ever buy socks

Bin85 · 02/11/2021 17:42

I don't tumble socks but luckily have a hot water pipe by the ceiling in utility room so I hang one of those peg octopus things on that for socks .

IncessantNameChanger · 02/11/2021 17:45

Now my two eldest have adult sized feet I buy the cheap black ones from Asda. I have literally about 80 identical pairs. Life is so much easier now. Before when I got a pack of five socks they would loose their pair within months and become part of a odd sock mountain.

Same for my youngest son. I got him about 20 pairs all identical. I wash every day but this is still the easiest method of dealing with socks

SickAndTiredAgain · 02/11/2021 17:50

@idontlikealdi

I don’t think my 2.5 year old knows socks are supposed to match..

To be fair I don’t wear matching socks either if they aren’t visible.

Macabroom · 02/11/2021 18:20

At least 2 years, until they wear out. I buy 2 identical multipacks of seven so they can all be mixed and matched. I've no idea if they are all still around as I don't pair them. He also has 5 pairs of trainer socks.

hiredandsqueak · 02/11/2021 18:28

Dd has socks in her drawer I bought her for year 4 in Primary, she's 18 now! She never grows out of or wears anything out. My other daughter was the same. My boys more than made up for it though.

1forAll74 · 02/11/2021 18:47

I used to wash my childrens socks by hand when they were youngies, and then pair them up and dry them somewhere. A few always seemed to get lost in a washing machine, and childrens socks don't need to be washed for ages and ages,on a washing machine cycle, as they wear out quicker..

lisaandalan · 02/11/2021 21:36

About 3 months, I hate socks looking grubby no matter how many times you tell them, take your socks off they still run around in them in the garden ect.

PositiveLife · 02/11/2021 21:48

Black school socks - about 5 fucking days. I buy loads at the start of term yet they can't find any after about a week AngryConfused

MeredithGreyishblue · 02/11/2021 21:52

They don't hang around long enough to get worn out looking! Where DO they all go?

AuditAngel · 02/11/2021 23:10

I’ve always considered socks to be semi-disposable. Reduces stress about losses!

I tend to buy socks about 3 times a yes (Christmas, start of short socks season aka Easter, and September) each child probably gets about 10-15 pairs each time

GrabTheDayByTheBalls · 02/11/2021 23:31

White ones which are worn any time out of school, Maybe 2 or 3 wears a pair! I swear dd thinks the wet trampoline is great with white socks on.

Black for school /soft play. Maybe 3 months. If they start to fade they go.

I'm always buying socks!
But I can't stand colored patterned socks, think that's from my dm as we never were allowed them?!

I tend to bulk buy. Just asda or tesco mainly. I prefer tesco as have the sizes inside as dd and Dsd are similar

Elldest only wears Nike etc but he's more careful with his.

TheChosenTwo · 02/11/2021 23:46

Oh ffs I didn’t realise this was a child specific phenomenon!!
The rest of our (older teen and then adult) family don’t seem to have a problem.
9 year old ds on the other hand….
I bought 20, yes TWENTY, pairs of socks from M&S for him at the start of the school year when I did his pants/socks shopping, at the last count I swear there were 4 full pairs.
I mean he can only have worn each pair no more than 3 times at an absolute push! Where do they go? What does he do with them?
I know he likes taking them off when he gets home. They end up behind the sofa, under the sofa, in the corners of his bedroom. In his school shoes, in his toy boxes, under his desk.
But every few days I go in and demand a sick amnesty and he hands over what he can find. WTF happens to his socks? I keep up with the washing Confused

immersivereader · 03/11/2021 01:01

I have a spare sock bag where all the spares go. When I need a really thrilling afternoon I get the bag out and do some pairing. This is a highlight of my year.

When I get really lucky, socks come out of the washer with their own matching partner! Who'd have thunk it!

To answer the question, 10 pairs of socks would last around 4 months. The trick is to buy all the same socks. Obviously I don't do this, hence my spare sock bag

MsPickle · 03/11/2021 01:04

Well-the time DH was all smug because he'd bought him and DS loads of black socks so no more odd socks...but they are the bloody same just different sizes so a nightmare to pair!

Then he thought he'd be clever and buy DS days of the week socks. Only I don't know how, DS loses them. Then has to wear odd days which drives DH potty.

I might start a second laundry basket just for socks to try and solve the conundrum of where they all bloody go
