Energy bills FML!

My fixed energy tariff is ending the end of this month, currently pay £96 a month. As directed via email, I looked at what deals are available with my current provider (EDF).

I can either do a short term (1 year) fixed and pay £223 a month, a long term (2 year) fix and pay £194 a month, or just go on the variable rate and pay £133.

WTAF! The first two are over double my current monthly payment.

I sort of listened to the energy crisis thing a few weeks ago and thought it was just smaller energy companies closing. Didn't realise the normality of it.

Have tried comparison sites and they can't give any good deals. Is it best just to go on the variable rate (it's more within my affordability anyway).

My friend has has similar. £100 a month jump to £225. She decided to stay on variable rate. Apparently that's what Martin Lewis is advising.

Yes, all fixed tariff options for us were more than double our current payments. We are sticking with variable for now, have got some credit in the accounts we can dip into if needs be.

Stay on the variable - at least until next April. See what's available then.

Thanks for advice. I'll stay on variable and keep an eye out for better deals, hopefully in the near future.

There are unlikely to be any better deals until next summer unfortunately. Demand is high and will remain so throughout winter and is not really expected to drop until March-May next year.

I've read in several places that it's best to stay on the variable rate for now. I got aggressively doorstepped by two students working for 'Money Expert' a few weeks back, trying to get me to switch to a fixed rate with British Gas. They eventually fucked off but jeeez.
