Trying to get more fibre into my fussy kids' diets. I'd be grateful for ideas.

Swap white pasta for wholewheat pasta
White rice for brown
Homemade cakes with wholemeal flour

Make some hidden veg meals

Some suggestions here

You can get bran in powder form that you could add to porridge or any cereal really.

Fruit is good.

If they don't like the brown version you can get 50/50 bread or wheat and white wraps.

We all think brown rice is nicer than white rice.

I've had to do low-fibre for colon surgery. So in reverse for your dc...
On my Do NOT Eat list were nuts and skins and seeds. Even a few nuts, chunky peanut butter and unpeeled fruit and veg made a lot of difference. I wasn't allowed tomatoes because of the high skin/seed ration to pulp.

Thank you. They do like nuts and seeds actually, that's a good shout. Can't go in lunch boxes obviously but would be good in meals/snacks. I like brown rice too but when I was doing low GI in pregnancy it sent my blood sugars sky rocketing- more than basmati

How old are they? Wholemeal bread, pasta etc should only be given rarely to under 5s.

Fruit - kiwi,
Baked beans
Veggie chilli, I make it with out the chilli and with a three bean mix and call is cow girl baked beans.

Homemade date & oat slices for snacks?

10 and 6. It's the 6yo in particular that's suffering from constipation but I don't think the 10yo eats brilliantly either and has previously had the same issue. Kiwis I can do!

Is this to help with constipation? If so, apples and apple juice. Saving grace for my fussy DS1. Dried apricots help too, but he wouldn't eat them.

ClaryFairchild · 01/11/2021 20:46

Cross posts with you. Just a heads up, biggest thing that helped with constipation was changing to lactose free dairy.

For some reason this is never suggested, even when DS1 was under paediatrician care. The understanding is that lactose intolerance leads to diarrhoea but in his case it caused constipation. We were finally able to take him off laxatives for the first time in many years by going lactose free.

longestlurkerever · 01/11/2021 20:48

Oh thanks, good tips. Dh is on lactose free but I never considered it for the girls. They love apples and apple juice already though and actually dd2 likes dried apricots

Dates. M&S do lovely stoned ones.

ClaryFairchild · 01/11/2021 21:41

I think there can be a genetic link to lactose intolerance. I've realised that I'm lactose intolerant too, after switching all our dairy to lactose free and realising that I feel
a lot better. Massive difference in how bloated I feel if I have ice cream vs sorbet, for example. Several of my DSisters have gone mainly lactose free as adults as well.

I use this 50/50 with normal white flour when baking cakes www.lonjevity-foods.com/product-page/fiberflour-ultra-fine
I love it, very expensive compared to white flour but way higher fibre than wholemeal flour and with much less of a taste/texture difference.
(The ‘normal’ fiberflour is very very wholemeal, it’s the ultra fine that is like white flour).
Dal is also great, love it myself but can’t get lentils into the kids! Baked beans are good too.

JoyceTempleSavage · 01/11/2021 22:12

Do they like smoothies? You can buy psyllium husk powder and stir it into a smoothie then drink it, followed by some water. Smoothie is just a little bit thicker than usual, doesn’t taste any different

This will give about 11 g of fibre

Duckrace · 01/11/2021 22:29

You absolutely must get them to drink more fluid if they are eating more fibre.

Pam245 · 08/03/2022 12:13

My son was the same but i went on a online course that help my fussy eater child
