More and more younger men loitering in women’s changing rooms

Anyone else noticing more and more young straight men going into female changing rooms to help their partners? By going in i mean not going into the cubicle, but going past the changing room entrance and standing in the sort of hallway/corridor bit of the changing rooms. I feel uncomfortable with this as the curtains don’t always close over so they can see in a little bit to all the cubicles, not just their partners.

Have noticed this more and more in “younger” shops such as H&M, Zara etc. The men in question are usually in their 20s.

Each time I challenge and they do leave to be fair.

This is not a trans thread and I have no issue with trans people using the changing cubicles - these are straight men loitering outside the cubicles in the bit where they can see in to all the cubicles.

Was in Victoria's Secrets fitting rooms the other day with my 13 year old (only place we could find that did fitting), and a bloke with his girlfriend just waltzed in! The woman who was doing DDs fitting booted him out pronto.

I’m in the central belt area of Scotland.

Yes I mean in the space right outside the cubicles so if your curtain was open they’d just see right in.

I suppose I would also not like it for anyone to loiter out there, the reason I particularly don’t like it when it’s men as there is a higher chance they are peeping for wank fodder.

I particularly dislike it when it’s shops where younger girls (ie 13 year old girls) also shop such as H&M and Zara, as I do think younger girls might be less street smart at looking out for pervs plus a young girl might also feel far less able to challenge an adult male.

Chances are the majority of these blokes are not perving on others, but I feel uncomfortable at the risk.

Whenever I see a bloke loitering about there I do politely ask them to leave and point out it’s the women’s changing rooms, and that there are some young teenagers changing in here, the curtains leave gaps, and so it’s not appropriate for them to be in there. They’ve always said “oh sorry” and left. If there are staff around I say to them too, but usually it only happens when there are no staff.

Haven't noticed this. They are usually left on little seats near the entrance to the changing rooms

Chocaholic9 · 01/11/2021 16:10

I would hate this. Very inappropriate.

How long are you undressed for when trying on clothes?
Surely not longer enough for anyone to even really see anything?

mvmvmvmv · 01/11/2021 16:13

I don’t think these type of stores have those seats. Even in higher end shops I’ve not seen any little seats for ages. Think they’ve been phased out.. annoying as it would solve the problem if they had somewhere to sit.

We still have the little seats (or pouffes? Velour cubes?) But in fairness I'm not troubling any high end stores!

This happened to me in John Lewis at the weekend. I challenged him and he told me his girlfriend had anxiety. I told him I wasn’t sure why that meant he had to stand in the ladies’ changing rooms and told him to get out. If the girl had anxiety then she maybe just needs to go shopping with her mum or a friend or something.

This shouldn’t be up to customers. Staff should be challenging men trying to get into the women’s changing rooms. Can’t believe I just had to type that FFS.

Will be complaining.

Nope

What is the difference in a heterosexual male who also transgender and a heterosexual male who is not transgender?

Hint "Trans" is not another word for gay (homosexual male).

More males have become active consumers of fashion and are interested in what their female partners wear and buy. Add that to change in socially acceptable behaviour around privacy in retail spaces and a lack of staff supervision.

Why are you objecting?

Well presumably one is making use of the changing room because they are trying on clothes, and the other has no business being in the ladies' changing room and is just standing there waiting for his wife/gf while she tries things on.

I'd object to some bloke standing in the women's changing room while he waits for his female partner too. He can jolly well fuck off and wait outside where he's supposed to be waiting, and give other people some privacy.

If it's a little phobic to presume the sexual orientation of a customer using the fittingroom

Why are you objecting?

VeryLongBeeeeep · 01/11/2021 17:01

SolasAnla 'girl' and 'women' include the descriptor 'female' within their definition (juvenile/adult female human respectively) so there was no need to replace those words.

I haven't noticed this OP, but round here changing rooms only reopened a few months ago and generally most I've seen still have restrictions e.g. one person per cubicle, waiting seats removed and some are still closed altogether (local branch of Next, I'm looking at you) so I'm genuinely surprised this is allowed - although staff may feel uncomfortable challenging it for many reasons, I guess.

Ijustreallywantacat · 01/11/2021 17:06

I suppose it depends for me where they are. If they're just in the entrance and there are seats/space to stand seperate from the stands, I suppose its fine. They might be left wandering about a bit awkward I guess. And yes I have been guilty of asking DH to sit on the pouffes so I can show him/he can get me another size. If its a tight space or they are actually outside the curtains then I see what you mean. It's hardly the innocent ones fault that the curtains don't work though! More and more shops I've been in actually have decent, thick curtains with no gaps or cubicles with doors though. I can't say I've ever really seen an issue though.

Unfortunately these days John Lewis is a little busy with their Insurance Regulator but I am sure the staff will be happy to explain what "Let Life Happen" translates to in real life

That may be how you limit the word woman however mvmvmvmv defines thewomen's changing rooms as females and hetrosexual/homosexual males who ID as female changing rooms

She has no problem with some males, unaccompanied or not, walking in and out of what is a mixed sex fitting rooms provided that male has feminine apparel somewhere on the males person.

Or knows the right words to say if challenged?

brokenbiscuitsx · 01/11/2021 19:38

Yes recently! A man waiting just outside the curtained cubicle for his girlfriend (H&M) made all the worse when the little girl with them says, is Mummy in this one? and proceeds to open the curtain. I’ve never shouted, ‘no!’ and scrabbled for the curtain so fast!! Blush
