When & how do you negotiate a salary?

I'm coming from teaching where salaries are not really negotiated. I've applied for a job out of teaching but which still asked for a degree and experience. The salary offered is pretty low.
I have completed round 1 which were some practical tasks that I had to submit. I've received this reply, suggesting they like me and may well offer me the job

'The team were really impressed with your submission and I'd like to arrange a short phone call with you so we can discuss the position further and the next steps moving forwards.'

When do I negotiate a salary? By email before this phone call, during or after? And how do you do it?!

Negotiate when they offer is standard but if your expectations are way out of what they've advertised cut your losses and raise it now. Depending on industry most businesses have a fall back for top talent but if you're 7k+ off it's probably not worth carrying forward.

And not by email!

Is the salary you want within the range offered in the advert? (assuming there was one?)

If it's way above, I think you need to be up front with them about what you want, so that they can make a decision about whether they are able to proceed. Depending on the sector, some places have pretty strict rules and they might not have much wiggle room to offer you more, even if they really want you.

They might let another candidate go for your sake, and then not be able to employ you, which would be really unfair when you are going into it knowing you want more than they're offering.

If what you want is within the range they're offering (e.g. they want to start you at the bottom of a band but you want to be in the middle), then wait until you have the offer and negotiate at that point.

Agree with the others.

If they have a band and you are in it, wait for the offer.

If there's no band - many advertise "competitive salary" then get your ducks in a row and approach them now. Not by email but on the phone or face to face.
