How common is ghosting in recruitment here in the UK?

I know it's fairly common in the US, bit how abou here? Still haven't heard back from two recruiters but one lady from a charity is telling me that I shouldn't take this as a "no".

Had an interview

'Excellent, we will be in touch later today..'

Never heard from them.

Terribleluck · 01/11/2021 17:54

@hundred how niche is your experience? That sounds horrendous and I'm glad you're back in employment

@DillonPanthersTexas

The better agencies will keep you in the loop, the shit ones not so much.
I agree. I have been ghosted by agencies but mostly deal with recruiters I know and trust so it happens much less. IIWY I’d build a relationship with a few good ones.

They’re salespeople working on commission but that doesn’t mean it’s ok to be rude, which ghosting most definitely is.

I gave up on job agencies years ago.

They never ever get back to you.

There's always someone who deals with your area of expertise ( in my case at the time hospitality/catering ) but they are never there at that moment and never call u back either.

And of I ever did get put forward fir a job after chasing them for weeks I discovered the jobs never existed.

Waste of time but u r unemployed I guess so they can treat u like shit and still feel superior

Moonflower12345 · 01/11/2021 18:03

I'm finding this do much recently. It's horrible.

I know my cv matches the skill set, and refer to that in the application, I take the time to write a cover letter addressing all the points in the ad and not even a response. It is beyond rude, I'm so fed up with it.

I had one this week that required me to answer questions on a one way video. I don't like these stupid jumping through hoops tasks but whatever. Had an email asking when I was free for an interview last week, then total silence.

Not particularly niche at all but unfortunately quite senior so hard to find roles at the right level, especially when the job market is stagnant that everyone who had a job was sitting tight and no new roles were coming on the market. I'd never really had to job hunt before, I'd almost always been head-hunted. The role I took is a grade lower than where I used to be so now I have to fight my way back up the career ladder again. But I'm just grateful to have a job to be frank!

CruellaDeVilla · 01/11/2021 18:03

@HundredMilesAnHour - I recently refused to attend a second interview like that, the prep work (meeting 3 of the management team and asking them questions) and presentation amounted to free consultancy so I declined. I was already in a job though, I appreciate its harder if you’re not. I hope you’ve got something now, good luck.

Itsnotgreatlike · 01/11/2021 18:08

In 20 something years of being in the jobs market I have only had a formal rejection letter twice. Every other job I have ever applied for, which is hundreds, has just not resounded, even if I have attended an interview. And even if they promised to let me know one way or the other.

Mind you, the rejection letters were patronising and really upsetting so I much prefer being ignored.

Good for you, I think that's the right attitude.

Some companies are either clueless and/or take the mickey. During my miserable job hunt, I was asked to a first interview where they wanted me to share in advance (!) a soft copy of work I had previously done for a client to "review the quality of my work and they'd ask me questions about it". Wtf?! If I had a copy of work like that (which I didn't), I would have been in breach of contract as all work belonged to my employer and it was not allowed to be sent to personal emails / saved to dongles etc. Hence why I didn't have any of my work. And if I did have my work, it would have been a massive breach of confidentiality to share it with anyone other than my client/former employer. I was absolutely gobsmacked by this request and raised it to the internal recruiter saying that surely this was a mistake?? They said it was normal procedure for them. So I withdraw from the interview process. Despite being out of work and desperate for a job. What a bunch of jokers. I'm not sure which I was more offended by, the request itself or the refusal to acknowledge that it was completely unprofessional.

I interviewed in February for a well knowing charity , felt interview went well, even had to do a 10 minute presentation ! Never heard back from them, I was 1 of 3 they were interviewing!

TheDogsMother · 01/11/2021 18:25

@Terribleluck The Head of HR was very specific about speaking to her colleague who returns from holiday today then getting right back in touch. They wanted a bum on a seat this week so I'm pretty sure it's not going to be my bum Grin

TheDogsMother · 01/11/2021 18:30

@Whatwouldscullydo Not all !! I will always get back to candidates even if there is no news or the news isn't good. It's an interesting experience being on the receiving end of this shit though so I am hoping I encounter another person out there with a bit of respect for candidates.

AlfonsoTheUnrepetant · 01/11/2021 18:39

I've been ghosted by both agencies and companies. With agencies it doesn't bother me much but with the companies it's after two interviews, with the second interviews involving presentations that I spent hours putting together and practicing.

For example, I had a second interview with a presentation on Wednesday and still haven't heard back. I expect that the answer is no but it would be nice to get an answer so that I can mentally close the file. Hey, ho.

It's very demoralising.

Terribleluck · 01/11/2021 19:00

Exactly! @alfonso mentally close the file, that's the best way to put it!

Terribleluck · 02/11/2021 11:28

Well the other one appeared he was off on holiday! Which is good news, the bad news is that I thought I had skipped the French language interview but I need to do it, so I think that's the end of that. Boo

Sorry to hear that, @Terribleluck. Better luck with the next application!
